How was this band formed
and who made up that ass kicking bandname?
Seth (guitars): The band was officially formed on
april 1 2004. I was moved by the will to create my own
musical project. I've had some previous experiences as
guitar player, but I wasn't satisfied with them. I
needed more control upon the band, more freedom to act
the way I liked. As founder, all I had to do was call
some long time friends (I've played with some of them in
the past), explain my vision and choose a name. As
regards the name, I first choosed "Our Empty Rooms", it
was meant to describe the waste land hidden inside every
human being. But when I saw the direction our music was
taking I realized we needed something else.
Neon:Synthesis doesn't have a meaning, it's just a sound.
But it suggests the idea of something cold,
artificial... I love it.
When I first heard NEON:SYNTHESIS, bands like Samael
and The Kovenant came up in my mind. What are your main
influences?
Seth: Each member listens to various kinds of
music, and so he tries to take his influences into our
songs. Obviously there is a common line beneath our
music, estabilished when the band was created. I think
our main influences are pretty evident: industrial
metal, some industrial rock, gothic, lots of EBM and
futurepop, dance music (like the one of the good ol'
nineties). You named The Kovenant; I can add Deathstars,
VNV Nation, Icon of Coil, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein...
all of these musical styles are mixed and reinterpreted,
trying to obtain something original.
You guys are still very young, but also very grown up
when it comes to the musical aspects. For how long are
you guys making music now?
Seth: Before joining Neon:Synthesis, each member
has had experiences with other bands, sometimes playing
a different instrument. For example our keyboardist L-Device
used to be the bassist of a punk band, and Thyper and
Alison were guitar players. Playing various instrument
can allow us to have a quite complete vision of the
music we want to create.
Your first promo is finished, and got a good critic
of our zine and more zines. Are you guys satisfied with
it yourself and did you expect those good words?
Seth: I'm never satisfied. I mean, the reviews
and the positive feedbacks we received are great, and I
am very happy about that. It seems like lots of people
appreciated our work. When we first heard the cd, after
the recording session, we were really proud of it. But I
also know that it's quite immature, there's still a lot
of work to do. We've already changed the structure and
parts of some songs and we're working on the sounds to
get a more powerful impact.
When I take a look at the lyrics, first thing I
noticed was the sorrow hidden in the words. Is this the
way NEON:SYNTHESIS looks upon this cruel world?
Seth: You're right, the first impression is that.
And often it is the only one. But there are other
lyrics, still unpublished, that let catch a glimpse of
light at the end of the tunnel. A hope that's never
openly shown, but hidden, suggested. My lyrics are
autobiographic. They refer to states of mind or
situations of my life. Each word I write has a meaning,
perhaps only for myself... I tend to see the glass as
half empty, so they are quite pessimistic. You can also
find references to T.S. Eliot poetry, I really love his
works, he's a guide for me.
Every lyric is written by a different person, while
on most bands there is just one lyrical composer. Why
did NEON:SYNTHESIS choose for this solution?
Seth: It happens because if someone in the band
has something to say, he can do it. In the beginning I
used to think I was the only one behind this project, so
I created the concept and wrote some lyrics, but soon I
realized that Neon:Synthesis could become more complete
if everyone gave his contribution.
You guys are from Italy. Italy aint really famous
because of their metal scene. How hard is it for you
guys to break through in a small world like the Italian
metalscene?
Seth: I think is never easy for a band like us to
break through, In Italy or elsewhere. For us it's hard
because there are few clubs that want a metal band to
play, especially in Brescia, our town... and often there
is lack of organisation, lots of technical problems,
because the spaces are not fully equipped (I refer to
our experience but I'm not generalizing, there also are
some great metal clubs with perfect equipment and
skilful sound technicians). Metal, industrial, goth and
EBM are still underground genres in Italy, I guess the
situation for a breaking-through band can not change
until this music won't get the same respect and
attention as the mainstream genres.
What are the plans for the future?
Seth: At present we're composing some new songs,
so we'll have to quit the live activity for a while. We
will record an EP as soon as possible, and it will
include new recordings of the old tracks and further
songs. We can't give more details for the moment,
everything will be revealed at the right time. Then
we'll start playing live again, promoting our work. We
hope to cross Italy's borders and play somewhere in
Europe (mmm... why not The Netherlands? ehehehe...).
Last, but not least, we'll try to get the attention of a
record label... ain't it the goal of every emergent
band?
Thanks a lot and keep on with the great work! Some
final words?
Seth: I wish to thank industrializedmetal.tk
for giving us the chance to express our vision. Visit
our website www.neonsynthesis.com and join our growing
community... the synthetic awakening has begun.
