This interview with BassOokah took place when they were still named Zeeuwse Meisjes Molestors.
First of all, could you introduce your band to the readers?
Yes of course, we are the Zeeuwse Meisjes Molestors (or ZxMxM if you wish) from The Netherlands. We're a not too serious project trying to mix extreme metal with drum'n'bass and everything related. So far we have released one demo called 'Satan Is A Drum'n'Bass DJ - to be downloaded for free at http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PNFPCZOZ - including 27 songs standing for around 30 minutes of music.
How did things get started?
Once upon a time Satan came to me and said "you should start a music project !" - and by a fatal coincidence he also said the same to a guitarplayer who happened to be a friend of mine. We hired an evil studio and started brainstorming with Satan, resulting in our first demo. Now if this only were true... the real story is way more boring. Me and a friend basically had the idea to start a music project together for quite some time, and when I once sent him an unfinished one minute drum'n'bass / breakbeat drumtrack he threw riffing on it... resulting in our first track "Bomb Ahead". We liked the sound of it, and so did other people, so we created more and more until we had about 30 minutes of music and released it as a demo. Now with a slightly different line-up, we're recording new tracks and preparing live performances!
A practical question - what does the name stand for?
That will - if you're not from The Netherlands - stay a filthy little secret forever I'm afraid... It's not of too much importance anyway.
How would you describe your music?
There are many ways to describe the tunes we make, but I always go for the description "drum'n'bass grind". Or, like as we said on our MySpace - "If Satan would start dinner with some Prodigy soup, then eat an Anal Cunt steak and drink a Darkthrone lager to finish with some Boney M icecream for desert - then his burps would more or less sound like us"!
What are your main influences?
There are many! To name a few obvious ones: GUT, Libido Airbag, The Prodigy, Anal Cunt, Pendulum, Zardonic, The Bombs of Enduring Freedom, The Crystal Method, Dub Pistols, Agathocles, Ministry, The Chemical Brothers, BBYB, ... the list is neverending really.
I have been listening to the first demo, in my opinion it's very silly but it shows quite some potential as well. What are your views on the demo?
Well - although it comes with a very raw production, I think it's not bad at all. The most important thing for us in the first place was the fact that we had tons of fun recording it.
What reactions did you get from other people?
Many people who enjoy the same sense of humor totally digged it! But as well some people had been sending us hatemail calling us childish fuckers... I don't know if I can tell you which ones flatters us the most though!
What can people who download it expect of it? And what is the reason that you've released it as a free download in the first place?
People can expect a whirlwind of simple though tight riffing, energetic drum'n'bassey drumbeats and totally groundbreaking and silly vocal lines! The reason for the free download is pretty simple - we made this music anyway, now lets make sure people hear it in stead of keeping it to our own laptops. We did release some physical copies of this demo as well, you can always contact us if you want to have one too, we must have some left somewhere.
You said before you're currently writing new songs already - will they sound very much alike the older ones?
The new songs we have written so far are far more experimental! Much more drum'n'bass sounds accompanying the drums than on the first demo, which was basically just drums and guitars with very very little basslines. I think overall the new songs sound way more energetic, way more industrial and in a way as well way more metal.
What are the future goals for ZxMxM?
We don't have any really... just to make more and more tunes and have some fun! Oh, and maybe improve a bit too... and we'd love to do more live shows! The first one is coming up on March 5th at the N201 (Aalsmeer) together with our friends from Het Brein Dat Kwam Uit De Ruimte, be prepared for an (H)electronic evening!
The interview ends here, thanks for your time. Got any final words?
Be sure to download our first demo, link given before, and give us your opinions! Keep an eye on our MySpace page www.myspace.com/zxmxm for updates and to listen to a few new tracks, cheers and thanks!
