First of all - can you introduce yourself and your band to us?
We are a Moscow based Russian industrial metal band named Digimortal, I'm Sergej - the vocalist.
Could you describe your opinion and/or views on racism within 1-5 words?
In our opinion, racism is one of the most shameful moral failures. It has created a lot of humanitarian catastrophes and there is no excuse to that.
What are your views on your own country when it comes to racism? Bad? Worse? Not thát bad? Please explain.
You cannot see it immediately, but that is rather hidden thing. We would not say that there is real big issue, but every now and then you can come across the mistreatment of non-Russians. There is a small crown of so called neo-Nazis, but hopefully it doesn't grow extensively, most of the people still have not kissed their mind and consciousness good by. We hope to overcome it.
It seems some kind of sick ´trend´ these days to bring racism into alternative music, referring to terms such as 'nazi-punk', 'NSBM' and 'right-winged electro'. What are your views on this? Do you think it will become dangerous?
The most dangerous thing is that the governments hardly do anything about it. Initially, racism is driven by competition fear of the poorest society clusters. Immigrants come and take the jobs away - nobody likes it, of course, but racism is definitely an extreme side of it and governments must do their utmost to fight the poverty. That will partly reduce the reasons for racism. Also, the awareness of people about this ugly fact must be raised. So far, racism interferes into music just because it is one of the most efficient ways of recognition. And it makes the whole thing extremely dangerous. In Russia a person can be incriminated for provoking inter-racial hate. The more musicians playing with racism themes will be punished, the safer it will be in the streets.
Did you witness any racist things during local gigs, festivals, etc? Would you reject an offer to play a show together with an outspoken right-winged band?
We have witnessed some of that things during our last tour and we were pleased to see that gig team immediately reacted by throwing Nazis away from the neibourhood. Nazi bastards got kicked in the asses. We would never see ourselves on-stage with these extremist bands.
Since Russia is known for liberating the Eastern block from Hitler's armies, you shouldn't expect any nazism over there - but reality shows otherwise. What are your views on this? Why do you think people who lost their grandparents to nazism convert to nazism themselves?
Pity, but is the fact of life. As we said, poverty drives people into extreme forms of competition. The country that sacrificed more then 20 million lives to win in battle with nazism, sees now these young basterds marching down the streets.
I heard there is quite some right winged stuff within the Russian metal scene. What are your views on this?
Like elsewhere. Although, it is mainly ignored by the major part of listeners. The big advantage of Russia is that population wise it has been a big mixture of different nations for centuries. That has inbreeded a certain immunity to racism. We like to see it and we hope that government will play its role to eliminate any racism exposures by reducing poverty. Consequently, these mind-sick people, parasitizing on society proplems will also be swept away from metal scene.
Got any final words?
Don't forget that we are all equal and come from one origin. Racism is some kind of a war of attrition that leads to nowhere and is ultimate destruction of our civilization.
