Artist: SCORNGRAIN
Album: 0,05%
Year: 2006
Scorngrain is a band from Finland who managed to become
a positive surprise to me with their debut album ‘CyberWarMachine’.
Their so-called “cyber thrash metal” turned out to be
quite powerful and experimental, which resulted in well
constructed songs and a killer album. Three years later,
Scorngrain strikes back with the next release called
0,05%. This new album features nine new tracks to
discover.
‘The Code’ starts with a typical thrash metal riff, to
be followed by some good piece of cyber death metal.
Some parts of the sampling are surprisingly
experimental, but fortunately this is always
experimental in a good way. ‘Toadstool Journey’ is a
faster track. The sampling is a bit more on the
background on this track, which gives it a more thrashy
attitude. ‘Mural’ starts very industrialized and
atmospheric, and the rest of the track follows with
ease. This track is more driven on its guitarwork than
the preverious ones. ‘Off with their heads’ is a song
that reminds me of the title track of the debut album,
with blasting drumworks and a fresh sounding chorus.
Übermensch has a German title, and in my opinion it’s
influenced by the German scene too. Bands like Rammstein
and Oomph! come in mind after hearing this track, and
also a little touch of Hanzel und Gretyl. ‘Draw The
Line’ is probably the most brutal track of the album,
with thrashy riffs and bashing drum works. The chorus is
very mechanized due to some wellfitting sampling. ‘Shot
Down’ is quite easy listening stuff, and might be the
most appropriate one for a single or in common. ‘Mama
Stabber’ is a decent uptempo song, with very wicked
sampling and industrial death metal guitar riffs.
‘Teaspoonful’ is definitely the track with the weirdest
title on the album, and its also the longest track of
the record. This track turned out to be surprisingly
easy listening, and it’s able to lead you back to
reality in a gentle way.
Musically, Scorngrain became more mature, that’s for
sure. They left some parts of their cyber attitude
behind them to replace with their old school thrashy
influences, which made the songs more mature and more
diverse. The score would be very near the 100 points if
I didn’t had one point of critic. The vocal sessions
are, specially compared with the CyberWarMachine record,
a little bit dissapointing. I couldn’t find if they
changed their vocalists (the CD booklet wasn’t very
clear about it, and the website is under construction),
but the vocals on CyberWarMachine were way better. If
they still have the same vocalist, this can be blamed on
the mastering. But in the end, still a very, very
positive vote.
