Artist: HISTORY OF GUNS
Album: Acedia
Year: 2008

History of Guns is a duo from London, existing as a project since the late 90s. Since then, the band already released a bunch of EP's and two albums, which makes 'Acedia' their third full-lenght release. This band says to be influenced by bands like VNV Nation and Underworld, as well by bands like Depeche Mode, Killing Joke and Bauhaus. 'Acedia' is released by the English label Line Out Records, who preveriously released Deathboy's 'End of an Error' album as well.

The stuff History of Guns presents us on 'Acedia' isn't somethnig very complex or groundbreaking. They manage to produce an easy listening mix of the old school era of industrial (gothic) rock, while added some wave elements to the music. All the songs are decently build and the band is quite creative with their guitars and sampling, but it's all just a little bit too flat to be totally convincing. Another thing I have a problem with are the vocals. Normally I don't mind the rawer, punky influenced vocals at all, but somehow on History of Guns it's different. It's hard to find the harmony inbetween the vocals and the music in some songs ('Born, Brutalised, Bought then Buried', 'Exhaust Fumes') while on other songs ('Drag On', 'It's Easy (To Go Blind)') the vocals fit the music very well, but sound a bit too monotome to be outstanding.

Acedia is definitely not a bad release, but I've heard better stuff in the genre before. People of depressing, old school gothic rock might really enjoy this one - for me, it's basically just another album. An average, just-good-enough score on this one.
