Artist: LLUTHER
Album: Agents of Empire
Year: 2005

Lluther, hailing from Ireland, is the work of a guy named Gerry Owens. After he has been brainwashed with music all his life and his appearance in several bands, he decided to create Lluther as outcome of his own creative and technical abilities. The debut EP ‘Venus Complex’ got good critics from renomated zines, and the live show (where he’s accompanied by four live members) turned out to be a blast as well. ‘Agents of Empire’ is the first full-lenght album of Lluther, released late 2005.

When I did a review for Italian one man project Into The Hole a while ago, I had pretty much the same deja-vus to the old school times as I am having now. But, there’s a major difference between those releases: originality. Where Into The Hole limits itself to just use the old school influences (not in a bad way though), Lluther goes further. For example, the track ‘In Decline’ contains an amazing bassline and a wicked chorus that even has a little of the hardcore metal touch! ‘For You’ is a more dark and sinister track and more based on old school influences, while ‘Stasis’ is a total masterpiece of modern electronic rock! My favourite track of the album is called ‘Father Of Lies’. This song contains some very dark electronic sampling all over the song, but that’s not what makes this song my favourite. When you hear the chorus for the first time it seems a little bit misplaced, because it sounds ‘too happy’ compared with the rest of the track, but the more you hear it, the more it sounds refreshing and wellfitting.

This ‘Agents of Empire’ album turned out to be one with an easy structure, although it was a positive surprise for me. The powerful though melodic voice, heavy distorted guitars and catchy synthlines bring enough variation, quality and joy with them, and I can’t see any industrial metal fan would mind to listen to this album. Next to fans of Into The Hole, fans of Nine Inch Nails and Kubrick will certainly appreciate this one as well. Another surprising release by Tiefdruck Musik next to the Limbogott release, which seems quite a promising label to me.
