Aima. What? Aima. Aima? Yes, Aima. Never heard of them? Well, don’t worry... you haven’t missed anything so far, because I haven’t heard of them as well. Until now that is. Since they were kind enough to send me their promotional material, I have heard of them from now on. Some basic facts about them, taken from their biography: the band is based in Rome, Italy (yes... Italy again) and exists of five people. They say to bring the worlds of metal, rock, electro and industrial together into a brand new style which they wish to call ‘oddrock’ themselves. This self-titled promo CD is the first release by this band.

The title of the first track, ‘Allyouneedislove’, gives you the impression of an emo band, but luckly the music decide otherwise. Dark gothic rock parts are followed up by agressive Machine Head sounding guitars and Lacuna Coil likely clean vocals. The growling of the female vocalist sounds surprisingly decent and confirms the (post-)hardcore influences that were a little hearable in the music as well. ‘Bushido’ continue to build on this basics, although there are some industrial influences added in this track. A little eyewink to the work done by bands like Tool and Fear Factory are hearable here and there, and the intermezzo even has some kind of doomy attitude. ‘Escargot’, which is French for snail, is the next track. This is probably the most extravagant track of the record, swapping from hardcore metal stuff straight to industrial parts and vice versa. A pity the lyrics are unfindable, because I am rather curious what some chaps from Rome have to say about snails! ‘Asskick’ is the next track of the promo. It has again the Machine Head likely guitar riffs and sound, although the song has strange industrial parts too with music that almost sound like the music people from the African jungle make too. Extravagant track again, although it is easy listening stuff too. ‘No Ghost In No Shell’ brings you back to the gothic influences of Aima again. Touches of Anne Clark, Lacuna Coil and various female fronted EBM bands are the basics of this song, and some good guitar work here and there sounds like a light in the dark. ‘Prototypes’ is the final track This is the longest and as well the most chaotic track of the release. Hysteric drumwork and industrial guitar riffs are followed up with cold gothic rock parts and even some live part mixed into this song.

Afterwards, I realized again that everything comes to an end. The promo has ended, and after my final conclusion which will follow now this review has ended too. If you are into easy listening stuff with weird parts, Aima might become a nice band for your collection, and in my opinion Aima makes decent stuff but, until now, nothing more than that. The potential to get better is there though!
