Artist: WHITE PULP
Album: Ashamed Of Yourself
Year: 2008
White Pulp is a foursome heading from out of the States
and Italy. A quick look at their MySpace page learns us
that it's born out of the ashes of a Marilyn Manson
tribute band by frontman Sonny, because he wanted to
express himself in a more electronic and new wave sound.
Among the influences list we find just one name (Nine
Inch Nails), so I think we can already guess what to
expect. 'Ashamed of Yourself' is White Pulp's debut
album, which is self-released in 2008.
The release opens with 'Blackout'. Its a very easy
listening opening track, with lots of old school gothic/electro
influences and some touches of Nine Inch Nails and
Fields of the Nephilm. 'Peace of Mind' is a little more
atmospheric, with heavy guitarlines and very powerful
drumming. The sampling and the vocal lines are
recogniseable, which gives the track an easy listening
touch. '80s' contains heavy distorted guitars, bashing
drumming and catchy vocal lines, which makes it one of
the most accessable songs on the release. 'Scared Eyes'
is one of my least favorite tracks on the release. It's
a very gentle track, mostly electronic based, with
extravagant vocal lines that somehow don't manage to
fully convince me. 'Highest Star' comes up next. On the
contrary, this is in my opinion the best track on the
release. It has very wicked drumworks, powerful guitar
lines and a sing-a-long chorus. The song is very
powerful and contains some modern influenced mixed
within the old school ones. 'God' is an instrumental
intermezzo, to be followed by 'I Hate You'. Despite the
hostile title, the track turns out to be very gentle and
easy going with an outcoming chorus. 'A Short Fall' is
also one of my personal favorites on the release. It has
a dark attitude overall, which comes together with
recogniseable vocal lines and very strong guitarwork and
drumming. 'I'm So Sorry' is as well quite accessable,
with many old school touches. 'Crow's Love' contains
very heavy guitars, gentle and modern sampling and
sticky vocal parts, which makes it one of the more
accessable tracks on the release as well. 'Got A Reason'
is again more old school based, clearly influenced by
bands like Nine Inch Nails, which is good for the
variation. The song overall is very gentle and easy
going, which is built on a spine of gentle and dark
electronic works. 'Sinking so deep' is a wellfitting end
of this release, which fits within the other tracks with
ease.
Overall, White Pulp doesn't offer something that hasn't
been done before - but they are good at what they are
doing. All the tracks, no matter the more modern or more
old school ones, are decently built, and although the
vocal lines don't offer a lot of variation, it's
certainly not monotome and doesn't get boring in the end.
I'm actually quite curious on what the future will bring
us from this band, because with a promising debut like
this I feel that it can only become better and better.
