Artist: JESUS HOOLIGAN
Album: Bad Noise Thing
Year: 2009
I can hear most people think "Jesus Hooligan? Never heard of that before! What on Earth can it be?". Well to be honest - I don't know myself either, and I didn't had a clue what to expect when this EP fell on my doormat. A quick look on the MySpace profile shows us that it's a one man project from the UK, and we can expect the following: "Music made from cement mixers, buckets, sledge hammers, club hammers, claw hammers, brick hammers hickory pick axe handles, lead piping, scaffolding, thick chains, concrete, underground pipes, drills, angle grinders, a tractor and a jcb." As far as I know, this four track EP is the very first release.
The release opens with 'Last', which is basically nothing more than the sound of a Yamaha motorbike mixed with repeatative vocal lines. 'Sinner' sounds already a little better, opening with a lullaby to be followed by quite nice electronic parts and once repeatative vocal lines. It's a pity this track doesn't have something like a beat, it could make it more accessable. 'Dog' brings us again motorbike sounds - backed by heavy drone - and accompanied by pretty useless vocal lines that show no real lyrical composition. 'Insomnia' is maybe the nicest track on the record, showing bashing programming and preachy vocal lines in addition of weird sampling on the background.
Overall, what to do with this release? I surely hope that this is just a bad joke, else it's a very pathetic attempt. At least the name of this EP shows a certain degree of self-knowledge...
