Artist: BLACK LIGHT DISCIPLINE
Album: Empire
Year: 2008

Black Light Discipline is a young band from Finland, existing since 2005. The five band members all knew eachother from different bands and projects, and decided to give birth to a band playing electro metal. The band's influences can be found within the genres of metal, EBM, industrial and even a little techno. The debut album of this band, 'Empire', was released in 2008 by the Finnish Osasto-A label.

The release opens with 'For All You Heavy Hearted'. It's a steady and dark atmosphered industrial metal track, in vein of bands such as Blood and Hanzel und Gretyl, with powerful riffing, recogniseable vocal lines and industrial keyworks. 'Tides' opens with gentle keylines and electronic sampling, to be followed by a heavy industrial metal tune. It consists of wicked drumming, haunting keylines, strong and straight to the point riffing and accessable vocal works. The song has as well a small, though wellplaced future pop influenced intermezzo. 'On The Stars' continues to walk on that very same path. It's build on a wave of bashing drumming and wicked electronic sampling and keyworks, accompanied by strong vocal works and diverse riffing. All together, it turns this song into my personal favorite one of this release. 'Out Of This Place' is, despite the dark electro opening, mostly a midtempo and easy listening track, with an outburst on the chorus. It switches from accessable guitar parts to experimental industrial passages, while both come together during the chorus. 'Words Have A Meaning' delivers us an excellent mix of future pop and (electro) metal. It contains diverse drumming and future pop based keyworks and sampling - as well hard riffing and wellfitting vocal lines. 'Same Story, Different People' (the shortest track on the release) is a pretty catchy track, including very recogniseable vocal lines, easy going though powerful riffing and drumming and electronic sampling to give the track a more industrial attitude. 'Hey Boy I Know' is again more atmospheric based, build on a wave of haunting keys and dark vocal lines. Next to this, the song includes excellent dark electro sampling and subtile added riffing. The outgoing chorus is recogniseable, and after a few times maybe even a very little catchy. 'Confession Equals Salvation' is the most experimental track, with downtempo drumming and gentle vocal lines. Musically the track is mostly build on cold, electronic keylines and haunting sampling, mixed with minimal riffing. 'The Song By Heart' is again a bit more metal based, with a chorus even reminding me to Fear Factory. It consists of cold keylines, welladded sampling and straight forward riffing, blended together with easy going midtempo drumming. 'No Perfect Plan' is another decent industrial metal track, reminding me a little to Deathstars. It has heavy riffing and ditto programming, as well very present keylines and wellfitting vocal lines. The album ends with the track named 'So Much Better'. It opens with extravagant electronic works, followed by an easy listening and midtempo, though surprisingly atmospheric industrial metal track. It moves from heavy riffing to experimental noisy sampling to wicked drumming and gentle keylines.

With 'Empire', Black Light Discipline offers you an album that will be affecting a wide audience. All eleven tracks are very decently constructed, and the album doesn't show a single weak spot. Next to this, it comes with an excellent production. I've heard that this band will be trying to get more known outside their native country with this release, and I firmly believe that there is a wide audience outside there waiting for this kind of top quality. An essential release for fans of Deathstars, Oomph!, Blood, Turmion Kätilöt and in common, satisfaction guaranteed.
