Artist: BLITZKILL
Album: Sinnestater
Year: 2009
Blitzkill from Germany has a long history of releasing demos under the name 'Art Interface' since 1995 before changing the name into BlitzKill in 2007. The first release under this name was the 'Metal Techno' CD (elsewhere reviewed on this page), which actually was a compilation of Art Interface demosongs. I think therefore it's fair to say that this 'Sinnestater' - although it comes with many new versions of old songs - can be seen as BlitzKill's debut album. It comes with 11 tracks with a style that can be described with the name of the compilation release: 'Metal Techno'!
'Kann Nicht' is the first track of this album. It's a bashing mix of industrial metal riffing and techno beats and bits combined with industrial sampling, sounding surprisingly danceable and accessable. 'Play Hard' comes with highly pitched vocals, a harsh beat and subtile distorted riffing. Overall the song is pretty decent, but sounds like it's just one minute too long. 'Destroy The System' comes with a distorted midtempo beat, recogniseable vocal lines and electro keylines, melted together by the subtile riffing. Overall the song is one of the less extreme ones on the release. 'This Is Ai' is a nicely moving track, bringing danceable beats and harsh riffing together in an alternative package. The next song is a remix of the 'Kann Nicht' track. It turns out to be a nicely moving track, with nicely added vocal lines and well use of the riffing. 'Metal Techno' is an excellent description for what this track really offers you - namely a dark mix of techno beats and sampling and metal riffing. It's a danceable track, even pretty accessable, and definitely one this band could identify itself with. 'No One' follows. It comes with breakbeat kinda programming, simple and straight forward riffing and nearly preachy-like vocal lines. Next up comes the title track - consisting of a bashing and bouncing beat and marching riffs. Overall it's a simple built track but very effective. The release ends with remakes for 'Destroy The System' and 'Metal Techno', which are nice bonusses for this release, as well a nicely distorted outro.
Although I couldn't think of any band that sounds like BlitzKill, this CD doesn't totally convince me. It would be nice to add more variation to the tracks, maybe absorbing some influences from out of the cyber or drum'n'bass corners could give certain tracks a powerboost. As well I would love to hear some future Blitzkill release with a slightly cleaner production, I think that could improve the final rating with at least 10 points as well. Still, with wicked songs such as 'Kann Nicht', 'Metal Techno' and 'Sinnestater' this release is definitely worth checking.
