Artist: RISE OF THE FALLEN
Album: Bloodline
Year: 2007

Rise of the Fallen is a Canadian band that’s already existing since 2000. According to the biography they’re influenced by bands like Einsturzende Neubaten and Joy Division. The project was created because they wanted to create some stuff that had the intensity of the pre-computerized music blended with modern electro textures without falling in any clichès. Like usually, the biography was filled with some vague descriptions about their own band and music, of which I won’t bother you on this matter. The Bloodline EP is the latest release, and it’s released by Golem Records in 2006. And it’s, like most EP’s, a prelude to a full-lenght release.

The first track is the album version of ‘Bloodline’. It opens with some very atmospheric musical works, to get accompanied by dark vocal lines and powerful guitarwork. Its a gentle and dark track in vein of their bigger influences, but with much more creativity hidden in the musical parts. ‘Tachutonium’ is a bit slower. It consists of marching drumparts, cold keyworks and strong, distorted guitar parts. Next up comes ‘Hyena (Mutation)’. It continues to walk on the same path as the preverious songs. Guitarwork that’s darker than dark, and sampling that’s even darker. Deep and dark vocal lines. Excellent stuff. ‘Rapture’ consists of dark electronic couplets and a powerful and atmospheric chorus. There are also some female vocals hidden here and there. ‘Indiscipline’ is more guitar based. The guitar riff is very powerful, and the bashing drum parts give the song a certain brutality. The electronic intermezzo after about 2:20 is very well placed. ‘Diluvian’ is again more electronic based. It reminds me a little to Samael here and there, which is not a bad compliment. Next track surprised me a lot, because I didn’t expect to hear an Adam cover on the album... and, they even picked my favourite track too. The cover version is the opposite of the dark and brutal electronic attitude of the original, although it still has the same atmosphere. The cover song sounds like a track of themselves, which is the biggest compliment a coversong can get. Another cover song comes up next: ‘Sun Goes Down’ (Killing Joke). Unfortunately I don’t know the original track, but I must say that the cover version took a big impression on me. Total old school darkness with danceable drum rhytms, excellent vocal parts and heavy guitars. ‘Armilius (Transfiguration)’ is an instrumental intermezzo track, followed by another version of ‘Bloodline’. It turns out to be a more EBM based remix of the title track, which could be nice for a cyber party. The final track is an Unholy remix of the song ‘Succubus’, done by Adam. It’s a dark electro mix like we’re used to of Adam, without losing a touch of the original song.

To be honest, I never heard of Rise of the Fallen before, but what a very big shame that was. True, this ain’t stuff I listen to every day, but does it has to spoil the fun? Of course not. Fans of the old school gothic stuff like Christian Death, Killing Joke, Clan of Xymox, etc.: let me present your new Gods: Rise of the Fallen. I can’t already wait for the debut album!
