Artist: XE-NONE
Album: Blood Rave
Year: 2005

A lot has happened with Russian band Xe-NONE after their debut EP last year. Remixes for other bands have been made, and in the underground industrial scene they already are pretty known because of some good reviews and interviews worldwide. Time for something new? Definitely! The Blood Rave EP is released near the end of 2005, more than a year after their smashing debut. This EP brings you over 20 minutes of Russia’s most talented act in its genre.

I was very pleased to hear that there were some major improvements made. First of all, the vocals of Lexy Dance are more powerful on this record. Second, they made their songs sound more mature, and some experiments with the melodies turned out to be good. The best song of this record has to be the title track for me: ‘Blood Rave’. After the intro, a powerful atmospheric song with some very catchy melodies start. The cold intermezzo fits perfectly into the whole song. I was pretty surprised to hear a very familiar melody when the next song started. It turned out to be a cover of the Dutch band 2unlimited, with their wellfamous hit “No Limits”. I am still not very sure what to think about this cover, because I do not like the original song at all. And does this really differ with the original? In the main parts it doesn’t. It is more like a re-recording in Xe-None style. ‘Transgressing’ has a powerful ambiance, and futuristic sampling. The chorus gets stucked in your head for some time after listening to this song. It’s a brilliant song again, they really managed to mix some dance with the popular fantasy metal of these days. ‘Decay Dance’ sounds like After Forever in the beginning (because of the female vocals mostly), but it floods over into a very powerful song. Again a song with a catchy chorus and futuristic sampling. The intermezzo is one of the best I’ve heard in years. The last song is the shortest song at the same time. ‘Stars’ is again a song to remember. Try to listen to this song without the urge to dance and go crazy. The female vocals are less present in this song than on the rest of the songs, which is a little shame. Because even more on this EP than on the preverious, the female vocalist shows that she is really skilled. There is no more doubt about it. Xe-None has developed an own powerful style, and is ready to conquer the world!
