Artist:
WE.GOT.THIS.FAR
Album: Bludgeon
Year: 2008
We.Got.This.Far is a brand new underground project
hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area. Although this
usually just rings a bell in the heads of thrash metal
fans, we are talking about an industrial metal project
here. We.Got.This.Far exists out of two people, who just
released their very first release - a single EP for 'Bludgeon'.
This release comes on a 12" vinyl (usually four songs
fits on a 7" with ease though), and can be found as a
promo CD as well for the little emo kids who don't have
a vinyl player. It consists of two tracks and two
remixes.
The 'Bludgeon' single kicks off with the title track. It
opens with dark, old school industrial sampling,
followed by heavy distorted riffing. The raw, maybe even
punky vocals fit the track excellently, which turnes out
to be an easy listening one with a few extravagant
passages. 'Dark Passenger' (a remix from the title track)
follows. It's again a track with very present old school
influences, resulting in synth pop sampling, heavy
distorted guitars and bashing drums - all wrapped
together within an easy listening package. The track is
somewhat danceable here and there, and despite the
extreme distortion it's as well pretty accessable - cool
remix in my opinion. The next remix is named 'Draining
to Nowhere'. It's an even more gentle one, with very
recogniseable vocal lines and old school musical works.
The wicked guitarwork on the original track is used on
this remix in an excellent way, which results in less
distortion but in my opinion in more creativity. 'Mistep'
is the final track of the EP already, this one is not a
remix from the title track. It mixes old school gothic
industrial tunes with modern dark electro sampling and
distorted guitarwork. The gentle drumming makes this
track the most accessable one on the release, and the
weird thing is - I prefer this track over the one this
single is mostly about!
Lately we had lots of bands coming on our webpage that
combined the old school with a more modern approach.
Bands like Deathboy, Lluther, History of Guns and White
Pulp recently recieved good reviews, and from today we
can add We.Got.This.Far to this little list as well. On
their first release they show decent song building,
original ideas and experimental skills, which makes them
more original than the bands I mentioned before.
Definitely a band to keep a closer eye on, because if
the release would have had a bunch of more tracks, this
debut release would probably have crossed the 90 points
line already. Fortunately, a quick look on their website
tells us that the full-lenght shouldn't be too far away
anymore!
