Artist: BURZUKH
Album: The Abyss
Year: 2009

As already said on the announciation for F**k em All - Volume 2 - Burzukh is probably the world premiere of an industrial metal formation from Pakistan. This one man project releases albums on a nearly annual basis, changing influences on almost every release. The so far latest release, 'End Game', included influences from crust to wave to electro to gothic to even some black metal. What surprises await us inside 'The Abyss'?

'Cold Rage' is the first track on the release. It gives us a good mix of old school gothic metal with a penetrating atmosphere and welladded keylines. The vocal lines are somewhat recogniseable, which proves to be an essential part of this track. 'We Did' mixes wave with electro wrapped in a blanket of accessibility. It includes distorted riffing, essentially placed keylines and midtempo programming. 'Inside' is a very atmospheric wave track, build on downtempo programming and a protounding bassline. The guitarwork fits the vocal lines surprisingly well, taking care of a little sorrowish touch. 'Denied' comes with a raw black metal attitude, with diverse programming and old school riffing and vocal lines. 'Gates And Constrasts' is a gentle track, sailing you from wave parts to crunchy chorusses all coming with an old school attitude. 'The Abyss' is a nearly seven and a half minute track bringing wave, electro metal, gothic metal and tiny touches of black metal. Overall the track is decently built, but I fear that the lenght of it is a little too much. 'Needlefly' is a downtempo track with experimental use of vocal lines and wicked drumming. The sometimes snoring guitars might sound a little disturbing in the beginning but it's just something to get used to. The release ends with an instrumental outro called 'Pit' - which is an old school metal track with disturbing cyber sampling.

Burzukh has lost some of his sharper and more extreme metal edges on 'The Abyss' that had to make way for a massive dose of wave. Mix this with the old school touches all the Burzukh releases seem to have, and you'll get the idea. Not the typical industrial metal, but definitely worth it to give it a shot right away.
