Artist: CAMP Z
Album: Our World To Come
Year: 2008

Camp Z from France is a project that was totally unknown to me before. Existing as a solo-project since 2003, Camp Z already participated on various compilations and released two albums before this EP named 'Our World To Come'. This band says to make post-punk/industrial/punk music, giving references such as Crisis, Killing Joke, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, Sleeping Dogs Wake, Suicide and Ministry.

The EP opens with 'Enter Darkness'. It's more or less an intro, covering ambient and electro influences wrapped in melancholy and a dark atmosphere. 'New Balance' follows. It's a dark old school based track, with melancholic clean guitar work swapped with more straight to the point riffing, downtempo drumming and wellfitting clean vocal lines. Overall this song reminds me to bands such as The Sisters of Mercy and Fields of the Nephilm. 'City On Fire' is more uptempo. It contains typical d-beat drumloops, raw melancholic vocal lines, straight to the point riffing and an old school wrap overall. 'Black Machine' is an accessable, old school influenced instrumental track. It has straight to the point programming, experimental sampling and riffing and a pretty accessable feeling overall. 'The Casualty II' consists of distorted riffing, wicked programming and recogniseable vocal lines. Overall the song has a dark atmosphere, and the electronic sample give it a little more modern touch. The release ends with 'From Darkness To Reality'. It's a nice midtempo track, with recogniseable vocal lines and ditto riffing, and an overall old school feeling.

With 'Our World To Come', Camp Z doesn't offer you some groundbreaking new stuff. They do manage to mix the original roots of industrial and electro metal with a cyberpunk approach (perfectly shown in the 3rd track - which is the best of the release in my opinion) on a noticable way. All the songs are decently build, and despite the true DIY production the tracks are very accessable to a wide audience. Fans of bands such as The Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilm as well of bands such as Kraftwerk, Ministry and Crüxshadows should definitely give this release a shot. Download it for free at the label website: zorchfactoryrecords.com. Decent, very decent stuff!
