Artist: X-TERNALS
Album: Cheap Korean Porn
Year: 2006
Yes ladies and gentleman, something about me first. I am
born in January. And if X-Ternals were my friends, I
could make you all believe that they released their
debut album in January 2006 to celebrate my birthday
with me. D'oh! Ah well, it was a nice try though.
Something about the band itself: X-Ternals x-ists of
five Italian guys and says to be influenced by bands
like KMFDM, Stabbing Westward, Orgy and Fear Factory.
Sounds promising enough to give their debut EP a careful
listen, and so I did.
'Dead Frequency' is a powerful song, which can be sorted
under the 'modern death metal' wings with ease. The
cyber influences are forcing themselves through a lot,
which gives this song a good identity. A point of critic
are the little emo sounding parts here and there, which
is mostly created because of the vocalist's sounding. 'I.A.D.'
is more mid tempo stuff (less brutal) which gave this
song a less hysterical jacket. This is a good thing,
because it is a decent track, although the chorus
irritates me (emocore chorus? Well, that is how it
sounds like). 'Hit The Concrete' brings the emo
influences clearly above the others. The very little
cyber influences make this song listenable, but if you
ask me this band could do way better. This is proven
with the last song, 'The Magician'. This is definitely
the best track of the album: a decent cyber death metal
track with some excellent drumming. After the EP is
finished, I must admit that I enjoyed it in some way.
This band doesn't bring anything new (bands like Dagoba,
Malmonde and Finish Me Off have done this before, and
mostly better too) but, keeping in mind that this is
just a debut release, this band does show potential
enough to keep an eye on them in the future.
