Artist: SYMAWRATH
Album: Chemical Psychodrama
Year: 2002

Because of my Spanish roots (I am 50% Spanish for if you still didn’t knew it) I am always happy to hear something new coming from Spain. My latest discovery is a band called Symawrath, which is a five piece hailing from Tarragona (not far from Barcelona). In the beginning they were making symphonic black metal, but after a while they decided to add some dark electro and industrial influences, which resulted in a brand new package. Sounds like a pretty good package huh? ‘Chemical Psychodrama’ was the first album which was recorded with these new influences and was released in 2002.

‘Paradox’ is an opener with a refreshing attitude. The heavy guitar sound and powerful drumtracks seems heritages from the past, but the EBM influenced sampling suck this track into a whole new dimension. Paradox is a little catchy, powerful and more than decent. ‘The 6 chamber, the 6 breath & the 6 drug’ is a song with a weird name. The song itself contains industrial death metal riffs and beatings, while the vocals (which are a mix between clean and raw vocals) really seem to fit this stuff. Between the industrial sampling, there are some nice cold synth parts too. A bit like Malmonde likes to create their songs, although this one is a little more wicked. ‘Suicide [S. 6 S.]’ sounds different. Machinery and robotic sounding sampling and beats are thrilled through your ears on this one, which make this one definitely the more harsh/EBM track of this record. ‘Seismic Symmetry 2001’ sounds like it continues where the preverious song has ended, but after a while the metal returns. The heavy guitar sound is there again, although this time it is more used in an atmospheric way. Mix EBM with Fear Factory and you might get the idea of this track. ‘Black Optick Sensors’ is the best track in my opinion. With the sampling that could fit in any thriller movie and the powerful instrumental works, this track may sound different from the others, but it is still very recogniseable for this band’s style. Bands like Dagoba and Zuul FX could learn some things from this song, and that is definitely a compliment! The next track is a dark club version of the opening track ‘Paradox’. This EBM version is very powerful and danceable. Goth people will really appreciate this one, but it’s not one that pure metalheads would dig easely. I like it though! ‘Martyrs in the Sea of Mercury’ is the final track of this album. It’s a very cold and EBM likely track, which sounds more like an outro than like a real music track. In the end, I must say that Symawrath turned out to be a positive surprise to me, and I am sure that they will turn out to be a positive surprise to many others who don’t know this band yet too!
