Artist: ABSENT
Album: Children EP
Year: 2008
Absent is a new dark electro project hailing from out of
France. It exists out of two people; Yannick Donet and
Frederic Bailly; who managed to create dark electro
tunes inspired by their favourite movies and electronica
culture. Each song has a special meaning, that is
mentioned in the press sheet. Since I think those
writings can be meaningful for this review, I decided to
quote them all.
According to the press sheet, 'L'aire de l'informe' is
about this: "the keyword to be connected with the dreams
in question, it is the formless. That is what looks like
the material before being, as a model, shaped, cut,
ordered." This results musically in a dark ambient spine,
mixed with melancholic electronic works and sick,
ticking sounds all over the track. It could fit
excellently as movie music, in scenes of dark and
sinister dreams.
'La capacité d'être seul' is about this: "the capacity
to be really alone corresponds to an elaboration. The
capacity in the authentic solitude has its foundations
in the first experience to be alone in the presence of
somebody. To be alone in the presence of somebody is a
fact which can intervene at a very primitive stage, when
the immaturity of the I is compensated in a natural way
with the support of the I offered by the mother." The
song itself is more melancholic and atmospheric than the
preverious track. It contains harsh elements of ambient
and electronic, brought together in a protounding way.
The interaction inbetween both the elements is essential.
It could be excellently used in giallo movies, when you
see the killer slowly getting nearer to his victim, in a
dark scene.
"Clinically, 'Willy' became a more normal child. He
learns and takes pleasure in his relation with the
others. But at the house, he is not completely normal,
he still asksfor some money, he is sometimes noisy and
he behaves by moments in an unreasonable way, especially
just at the beginning of the dinner. But he has a
charming personality, he understands better and better
the difficulties of his parents, who remain cold the one
to the other one. The mother is very sick, depressive
and is on drugs". The song is a torturing and crushing
one, with electronic works that can drive weak souls
into madness. It can be used for any electic chair
scenes in psychological thrillers with ease.
Next up comes 'Processus primaires'. "There are three
processes which begin very prematurely: the integration,
the customization and following these two processes, the
appreciation of time and of the space, and some other
characters appropriate to the reality - the realization."
It goes back to the more ambient touches, combined with
orchestral piano works and gentle, dark electronics. It
could fit in any movie and/or scene I described earlier.
The EP continues with four remixes. Each remix shows
melancholic versions of the preverious tracks, while
added different influences from their own. Specially the
remix La Division Mentale did is pretty impressive, with
the spastic programming works.
Absent offers you stuff you don't hear every day, and in
my case don't want to listen to every day either. It's a
nice break out of the industrial metal atmosphere, and
will definitely appeal to fans of anti-commercial dark
electro in general. Not just for extremists, more or
less for minimalists.
