Artist: CONTECHED
Album: Criminal Industry
Year: 2008

It's always a pleasure for me to be hearing about new upcoming projects or bands from my area. Conteched is a brand new project hailing from the capital of The Netherlands, existing of Reel's guitar- and bassplayer plus a so-called 'Skin Manager' and a 'Lyric Executive'. When I surfed to their MySpace page to check their influences, I saw a list that was way too big, so I won't bore you with this. Conteched describes their music as 'Corporate Metal' anyways, and none of the bands that are among their influences list calls their music like that. So, this three track promo called 'Criminal Industry' will be a worldwide first meeting to this brand new self-proclaimed music style!

'Mr. Conman' opens with industrial sounds and melodic guitarwork, but soon the attitude changes and a modern and heavy track follows. It has very strong riffing, gentle industrial intermezzos and bashing drumming. The hardcore likely vocal works fit the music excellently, as well the nicely added sampling within the (pre-)chorus. 'Predator' is a little bit more uptempo. It has strong and recogniseable vocal lines, powerful drumming and straight to the point riffing. The melodic intermezzo is a bit of a contrast with the rest of the track, but it doesn't sound weird in any way. 'War Paint' is maybe the most easy listening and accessable track on this three-track release. It has the more 'primitive' though very effective riffing (like Rammstein used to do in their better days), easy going drumming and recogniseable vocal lines (even a little bit of a catchy chorus). The industrial sampling that is spread all over the track give the song a more lighter attitude, without losing the power of the straight to the point riffing.

Although Conteched is still a very young band, and their influences are clearly hearable, they don't exactly sound like anything I've heard before. They have the same heavy touch as more cyber bands like Malmonde and DyNAbyte have, and the fact that two out of four bandmembers are as well members of Reel can be found back in little things such as the strong self-production and sampling and song structure. Think about all of this thrown in a blender, and you might get the idea of Conteched. This first three track promo is a very promising start for this foursome, and it seems like a certainty that they will crush many more souls besides just mine.
