Artist: HÆCKEFLØSSE
Album: Decieved
Year: 2007

When you are a reviewer, you get quite some surprises now and then. Good albums, bad albums, clones from other bands... from all continents of the world. Aren’t there cool bands from Holland then? Oh yes, many. Just look at DeadCell, Reel, Mechanism, Transworld, Next Waste Dimension... Hæckefløsse? No, never heard of them. But, relating to their press sheet, which was written in perfect Dutch, and the adresses mentioned on it, they must be from Holland too! Why haven’t I heard of them before then? Well, the answer is pretty simple. After some research on the internet, I found out that this band is originally a punk band. But, according to their biography, they recently left their punk attitude behind and substituted it for an all industrial way ‘that makes you feel like being ran over by a herd of grinning mammoths.’ Sounds very promising indeed, but a review hasn’t been made on just one line on a press sheet, so I took the CD and pressed the ‘play’ button.

‘Who Am I’ features cool sampling parts, strong guitar riffs and bouncy programming works. The vocal lines are easy to follow and include a certain amount of catchyness in the chorus. ‘Chimera’ is a little more uptempo with wicked programming, melodic though powerful guitarwork and (with exception of the melodic chorus) spastic vocal lines. ‘Icons of Mortality’ has very wicked programming works. The song itself is pretty melodic and easy listening. ‘In Control’ consists of very catchy vocal lines. The programming has a little d-beat attitude, which can probably be related to their former punk status. ‘The Future’ is some kind of intermezzo track, which lays inbetween electronic music and darkrock. ‘PlasoaAB’ is again an uptempo track with a very strong guitar riff and wicked programming works. ‘Ounga Boung B’ is a fast industrial metal track with strong cyberpunk influences. The guitarwork lays inbetween thrash and punk, which is a good combo with the fast programming. ‘The Decay of a 21st Century Ghostbuster’ is the final track on the record. It’s pretty easy listening with an old school guitar sound and surprisingly cool keylines.

In the end, I must state that the mammoth description wasn’t one that is made up for nothing. Really powerful stuff, raw and punky clean vocals, excellent and powerful riffs and programming works... Hæckefløsse has it all! Fans of bands like Ministry, KMFDM and various cyber punk acts – go and find out about this band right now! This CD made me curious about their live performance as well...
