Artist: DEE N DEE
Album: Words
Year: 2009
Dee N Dee is a French four-piece, formed in Calais in the midst of the nineties. The band released EP's in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2005, as well tracks on many compilations - before finally releasing the debut full-length 'Words' - which gets distributed in France by the highly acclaimed Season of Mist. According to the biography, we can expect "12 titles impregnated with hypnotic and tense ambiences at the crossroads of indus, metal and noisy ways". Dee N Dee already played various live gigs in and outside France, sharing the stage with bands such as Godflesh, Atari Teenage Riot, The Young Gods and Punish Yourself.
First track, “The Job’, opens with a very metal sound guitars and cymbals ringing it in. The vocals intensity works in with awesome precision, the addition of spoken clips is melted in and just helps with the complete sound of the track. The guitar solo has an interesting “picked“ sound before jumping into the metal again to end. Next track, “Vile”, has a sound of starting up for its opening a clever way to open the track. The vocals begin the song with the guitars and drums loudly and proudly following in with feverant intensity. Odd spacey sounds follow in without fear and lands perfectly into the mix. Next track, “Fader”, a steady tempo with loud vocals screaming forward as if a battle call. Sirens take place with the vocals at the slower parts blending in the music composure. Fourth track, “Flighty Child”, starts with an almost western eeriness with ominous breathing and guitar. The vocals add to this slower tempo song with riffs and spoken clips added in at the best points amazing composition to this creepy sound. Next track, “My Sun”, has an almost tech pop opening with lighter drums, before diving into a more deep sound with vocals following in. Next track,”Grey”, very slow but very metal opening, drums quicken the pace. The ending is very fast beat with the screaming vocals to close out this track. Seventh track, “Sonicate”, opens with a clip sounding of an old movie before starting in with guitar and drums. The vocals have muted sound that blends together well between the guitar and drums. Eighth track, “Way Out”, has a very static like opening with almost robotic sounds then the louder guitar and nice drum beat to bring in the track. The vocals a bit muted go into the track with spoken clips that add to the music perfectly. The track ends with a very hollow sound almost as if in a tunnel. Next track, “Words, starts with a guitar as lead following in drums with scrambled sound clips in the back like muttered voices, the vocals are in perfect rhythm for this track . The track slows and in place adds the voices clips before speeding up to the original level of intensity to close off with. Tenth track, “Feellike”, starts with a spoken clip vocals follow with hard drum and guitar beats that do not let up but beautifully in harmony with each other. The solo of whining guitar is a fun break in the song ending out on the same level it began with. Next track, “Money War”, starts off with very rock guitar allowing the drums to slowly make their way into the track then the vocals are presented. This track remains consistent through out to the end. Last track, “Trip”, starts with a beeping and metallic grinding behind low drums and louder guitar, the vocals are melted into the mix the metallic grinding ever present. The short break allows for the grinding to be alone before the vocals come in with the music. The vocals end out this track without breaking tempo.
This band has many different sounding tracks allowing for everyone to grab something from it. The quality is great as are the ways the different sounds are composed and blended together, I am very please with this album and am looking forward to future releases I can only imagine where this band will next go.
