Artist: HELALYN
FLOWERS
Album: Disconnection
Year: 2005
As I already said many times, there is something special
in the Italian skies these days. New industrial acts
seem to be given birth to each day and new releases are
falling from the sky each month. Today I recieved a
promo package of Italian band Helalyn Flowers.
Describing their music as “the ultimate approach to the
modern way to play rock ‘n’ roll”, I really had no idea
what to expect.
Their debut EP is called “Disconnection”. This self
released five-track EP gives you almost 25 minutes of
music. The whole release is build with the same concept:
futuristic sampling and simple basslines mixed with some
punky programming and clean female vocals. Every song
has also got its own catchy chorus and poppy melodies,
although I must say that every song has got its own
identity. The first track, “Acid Love Code”, is with six
minutes and nine seconds the longest track on the EP.
After the cold intro, the song kicks off with some easy
listening industrial. The rock ‘n’ roll influences are
clearly hearable, but also the punk influences are good
hearable. This all, including the catchy chorus, make
this song a good one. The fear of this duo beeing a one
hit wonder is immidiately taken away by the next track,
“Alienate Me”. Harsh lyrics and an intro which remind me
to ...And Oceans are the first thing I noticed.
Afterwards, this song transforms into the best one of
the EP if you ask me. The music is pretty simple, but
damn effective. The vocals are used on its best in this
song. The outro of this song is very powerful, while the
first seconds of “Alive” are pretty quiet. There is a
cold atmosphere on this song, and somehow the chorus
remind me to Evanescence in a way. This is maybe the
most poppy song of the EP, although the outro is a
beautiful and orchestral one. “Disorder” kicks off with
atmospheric music, and this path will not be left in
this song. The guitars are not powerful enough in this
song if you ask me. “Amnesia” sounds more experimental
to me. Cold, doom metal likely music with poppy
influences and harsh programming. The vocals misfit a
little here and there, but in the end this turned out to
be a good debut release. The production is more than
satisfying, while the English pronounciation is
surprisingly good for an Italian band. Definitely a
project with potention, but the next release may be more
powerful if you ask me. For fans of Dope Stars Inc,
Zeromancer and Crack Ov Dawn!
