Artist: DOL THEETA
Album: Goddess
Year: 2008
'Dol Theeta is the second project of the "Electronica Art Metal" vision of composer Thanasis Lightbridge, and includes Kortessa (Vocals) and Dim (Guitars) members also in Dol Ammad.' This quote, from Dol Theeta's official MySpace page, immidiately caught my attention. Of course, a quick flashback to the review of the latest Dol Ammad album showed some of the most amazing and unique music I heard lately (resulting in a perfect score), so my curiousity about this new project was awaken immidiately. The first physical evidence of this release is a three-track EP named 'Goddess', out on Thanassis' own Electronic Art Metal label.
The EP opens with the title track, logically named 'Goddess'. Overall the song is captured within a dreamy atmosphere, accompenied by beautiful female opera vocal lines and slightly distorted guitars. The midtempo drumming makes this track very accessable, and guards it from getting too much to the ambient side. Overall the beautiful electronic sampling turns out to be the spine of this track. The next song is a so-called 'Dream of Doors' (re?)mix from the title track. The mix turns out to be more electronic and future pop/ambient likely, without getting boring. It's a slowly driven track, that sounds like it's guiding you from one cloud to another. 'Deathstars' is already the final track of this three-track EP. It's build on a progressive attitude, with heavy drumming and very diverse guitarwork. The gentle electronic sampling is used to create a dreamy attitude, which fits excellently with the nearly whispering female vocal lines.
'Goddess' managed to fulfill all my high expectations I had up front. Musically, you can definitely hear lines with Dol Ammad - although Dol Theeta turns out to be a bit more accessable and mainstream. This doesn't mean that all the songs would be very radio-friendly though, since there is a great complexity hidden in (mostly) the samples on the track. Therefore, a free hint from your humble reviewer - listen to this EP with headphones on, you'll be able to hear many uncovered details within the music!
'Goddess' turns out to be an excellent teaser and introduction for what we can expect on the upcoming debut album 'The Universe Expands', and is highly recommended for anybody who loves to hear a wellconstructed mix of electro metal and classical music. Oh, and the EP also includes a cool videoclip for the title song! Don't miss this for any reason!
