Artist: GOLEM 101
Album: Dunkelkammer EP
Year: 2006
It is always a pleasure to hear that some band is
working on a new release. Specially when that particular
band is one of the most talented unsigned acts and best
kept secrets of the industrialized metal world! Since
their ‘Prinzip der Finsternis’ record still hits my CD
player frequently and I have seen two killer live shows
of them in Holland in April 2006, the addiction for this
band has not became less. The new release I was talking
about is named ‘Dunkelkammer EP’, which exists a new
version of their Dunkelkammer song plus nine remixes by
various talented bands and individuals all over the
globe!
The release kicks off with the remake version of
Dunkelkammer. The biggest difference in my opinion is
that they managed to create a even more powerful song of
an already very powerful one. Some blasting drum machine
work is almost bouncing straight through your ear
trumpets, and of course the cold synth work and the
techno influences are still where they belong. The
biggest improvement the band did on this song is the
conclusion. The last half minute is filled with sorrow
and despair while the old song was just ‘cutted off’.
The next remixes give to everybody something they would
adore. The dark electro fans would probably dig the
‘Drugpig RMX by Reza 287’ and the ‘SW Version by T.
Jefferson’ remixes, while the ‘Camera Obscura Remix by
Natas Corpsegrinder’ is more developed for the people
who dig the heavy beatings. Fresh also provided an
ambient remix for the sake of it, and the so-called
‘Noton Remix by Oliver Trapp’ could fit in there as
well. All the remixes are good if you like the different
styles, but since I am not a big fan of ambient I don’t
really dig the last two tracks. There are some remixes I
would like to say a few more words about, like the remix
done by Chilean EBM metal heroes Vigilante. In one word:
outstanding! Knowing other remixes of this band already,
I was already aware of their talent to bring their own
style into other songs, but this remix is definitely
their coolest so far. Harsh EBM beats mixed with great
synth and guitarwork, and some surprisingly gentle
intermezzo makes this remix the best of this release.
‘Dunkelkammer (Speakeazy Mix by Gabor Malik)’ is also
one of my personal favourites. The 80’s influences in
this one are clearly hearable, which turned this remix
into an easy listening but above all an original one.
The guitars are surprisingly freshly mixed through this
mix, which gives the whole track an extra vibe. Gabor
Malik is a rather unknown guy from Hungary, but don’t
blame me if I am going to look for more of his stuff!
Another remix I just have to comment is the one
T3chn0ph0b1a from Italy made. The remix is very spacey
as we are used to with this band, but DusTech (according
to the band he made the mix) is some creative alien who
did some strange mixing with the vocals. The way the
dark synth intermezzo is made even more dark and spacey
deserves another compliment, and although this seems to
be an old remix (5k0tt’s own words) I will dig this one
forever.
As bonus on this remix EP, Golem 101 added a DVD
including the new Dunkelkammer video, a second
Dunkelkammer video which was edited by vocalist Reza 287
(with lots of cool live shots!) and the so-called ‘DuKa
Doku’. This documentairy gives you a small twenty
minutes of behind the scenes activity of the videoshoot
(which looks like it has been taken place in Alaska!),
and some cool interviews with all the bandmembers
explaining the bands history, music and more. I strongly
recommend this new package to anybody out there, because
like guitar player Dave says in the making off: “Golem
101 is the future. Golem 101 will come. And Golem 101...
is cool!”
