Artist: DEATHBOY
Album: End of an Error
Year: 2006
Deathboy is a four piece (five piece on stage) from the
U.K. that has been playing around since 2002. They say
to play a style that still has to be named. Since terms
like ‘futurepop’ and ‘deathrock’ were already existing,
they decided to name their own style ‘futurepunk’,
relating to their DIY (do it yourself) attitude when
spreading lots of demo stuff themselves. Somehow, they
seemed to get bored with the DIY attitude in a way,
since they signed to a label named ‘Line Out Records’ in
2006. Near the end of 2006, they released the ‘End of an
Error’ release on that very same label. This album
contains production by Rico (Gary Numan, Tricky) and
John Fryer (NIN, Depeche Mode, Dope Stars Inc. and many
more) and artwork done by Chad Michael Ward (Marilyn
Manson, The Cruxshadows).
Musically, I wasn’t able to hear anything new
unfortunately. Take Nine Inch Nails and add some little
EBM/future pop and synth pop influences, and there
you’ll have it. ‘End of an Error’ gives us nearly 52
minutes of this package, with variable success. All the
tracks are wellconstructed and overthought, but not all
of them seem to be convincing. Where some of the tracks
are exciting from the beginning until the end, very few
tracks also bore me. Amongst the better tracks is ‘Black
Morning’. It has a catchy chorus, a bouncing beat and a
slicing guitar sound. The intermezzo is filled with
sorrow and gives this track an atmospheric attitude.
‘Slip’ is also one of my favourite tracks of this album.
It’s maybe the most easy listening track of the album,
with a gentle beat and sailing synth works. The
characteristic vocal works are very wellplaced in songs
like these. Also, it seems impossible to miss the
bouncing bassline in this track. ‘Smile You Fuckers’ is
also among my favourites. Its a faster track than the
others that I said a few words about. The chorus is very
catchy, and the guitar work is very wicked.
Since this band claimes to have punk influences, I
searched really hard to find some of them. But
unfortunately, I failed. Maybe they are referring to the
vocal works, I don’t know, but I couldn’t really find
punk influences in their music (or their lyrics). But
despite this, Deathboy is certainly not bad at all, but
unfortunately not really convincing at the same time
either.
