Artist: EROWID
Album: Pro Aeturnum
Year: 2008
When I first looked at the CD cover of Erowid's 'Pro Aeturnum' album, I was expecting the worst. Judging from that CD cover, I was about to listen to a nekro, kvlt and as well grim old school black metal band - but fortunately you cannot judge a book (or CD) by its cover. Erowid, a two-piece from Scotland, turned out to be a blasting industrial black metal act. According to the press-sheet, this 'Pro Aeternum' release was recorded in 2007, and contains "a brutal mix of ferocious riffing, pounding rhythms and dark soundscapes crafted into a black sonic attack". And oh yes, this release contains six tracks.
After the intro, called 'Descending', 'Unleash the Extermination' follows. It contains excellent black metal riffing and vocals, mixed with experimental industrial programming. This track, of nearly seven minutes, is blessed with a dark atmosphere and includes some symphonic keylines here and there. 'A.T.G.' (duration six minutes and twenty seconds) comes up next. It opens with dark ambient musical works, to be followed by an uptempo industrial black metal track. This song covers the best programming of the album, mixed with decent black metal riffing and raw, evil vocal lines. It's a diverse track, with slower and faster passages. The title track, 'Pro Aeturnum', is the longest one on the release (8 minutes!). It contains wicked programming, dark and evil riffing and some slightly added ambient tunes. The recogniseable vocal lines give it a more old school touch, when the programming loses some of it's insanity now and then. 'End Game (Prophecy of Flames)' comes up next - again a looooong track (nearly seven minutes). It follows the path of the preverious tracks - containing wicked and experimental programming, dark riffing and evil vocal lines. The song goes from fast to slow passages, and includes a few symphonic and ambient touches now and then. 'The Final Release' is a heavy distorted ambient likely outro, with diverse guitar work and slow, sick programming.
With 'Pro Aeturnum', Erowid delivers a decent industrial black metal release. Nothing new and groundbreaking in here, but the regular industrial black metal fan will certainly appreciate this one.
