Moth Complex is a young and fresh band from Dublin,
Ireland. They say to combine bruising rock and off-kilter
electronics with powerful and gentle female vocals. This
band exists out of two people: Aoife OLeary and Gerry
Owens (also known for his solo project Lluther). Their
debut album ‘Core’ had some good reviews here and there,
but didn’t really force a break-through in the
underground. Nowadays, their latest release is the
follow-up on the debut, the ‘Error 256 EP’. It brings us
three tracks and one remix.
The first song is called ‘Learned My Lesson’. It
features a bouncing bassline through all the song,
accompanied by distorted guitars and very sensitive and
wicked vocal works. The dark lyrics fit the song
excellently. The chorus is a little catchy, which is
always a good thing for an opening track. Next song is
‘Non-Fiction’. This song has the most impressive vocal
works of this EP. The guitarwork is a little less
powerful than on the preverious song, and this fits the
‘atmosphere’ of the track excellently. ‘Swarm’ is the
third track on this EP. This song contains very dreamy
electronic works, and this mixed with the beautiful
vocal work seems like a lethal combination. Its a very
beautiful song filled with a dark atmosphere, and the
guitar intermezzo wakes you up out of your dream to
remind you about the harsh reality of this planet. Next
up is the so-called ‘Error 256 remix’ of ‘Learned My
Lesson’, done by When Silence Becomes Art. This remix is
more harsh than the original track. There are quite some
noisy elements planted in it, but luckly the sweet and
dark atmosphere of the original track doesn’t get
completely lost. This remix is a nice bonus, but I still
prefer the original track.
The combination of the pounding electronic beats, the
heavy distorted guitars and the sweet, innocent and
sensitive, though powerful female vocals seems a real
hit. Songs like these never get bored. To me, it seems
like Moth Complex is ready to conquer the world. Don’t
let the title of this EP fool you, because you’ll not be
finding any errors!
