Artist: BEAT IN ZEN
Album: Fifth Victory
Year: 2006
Once upon a time in France, there were two friends named
Eugéne and Christophe. But, when Christophe found out
the secret affair of Eugéne and Christophe’s wife, he
decided to rent a bodybuilder to beat Eugéne up. They
made an appointment on 11 PM next to the Arc de Triomphe,
but unfortunately the bodybuilder was rather drunk and
picked Christophe in stead of Eugéne! Christophe tried
to tell the bodybuilder that he was terribly wrong.
“Don’t beat me, beat Eugéne!” But the bodybuilder did
not listen, and in the end Christophe’s teeth were this
demolished that he couldn’t talk normally anymore. With
his last desperate call he tried to convince the
bodybuilder again. “Fon’t beat me, beat inzéne!” This
made such an impression on the bodybuilder that he
stopped the beating up and he created a brand new band,
named after the last words of Christophe: Beat In Zen! I
don’t think you will ever believe this story, but that’s
ok because I just made it up. The only true fact in this
story is that there really is a band from France named
Beat In Zen! Some facts about them: they exist of two
people who created this project somewhere in 1998. They
released some stuff already in the past, but some little
time ago they released their latest full-lenght named
‘Fifth Victory’. They describe their stuff as “The great
electro lethal show”... any idea what to expect? Me
neither, so let’s find out!
Albums like these requires a lot of patience and time
from you, but in the end they really pay you back. Beat
In Zen manages to suck you into a different world in
each song. For example: ‘D.N.A. and the Ants’ gives you
a one-way ticket to the mechanized future with robotic
samples and pounding guitars, while ‘Spleen Spiders And
Spine’ brings you back to the darker times of the 90’s
with some NIN likely stuff. ‘Link Your Roots’ on the
other hand is a more brutal track, while the soft
touches of ‘Massoud Notx’ just passed by on the
preverious song! Yes people, this album is filled with
surprises indeed. Without any shame they manage to mix
industrial, electro and metal into one big weird mix.
There is one particular song that I want to say a few
more words about. ‘I Falling Asleep’ turns out to be my
favourite track of this album, because it has such
different elements in it without it sounds like a badly
mixed up track if you know what I mean. While in the
beginning they provide some more of the brutal kind (think
of Thee Maldoror Kollective), they slowly made the track
darker and darker and some of the old school touches (in
the guitarwork I even hear a little GnR!) while the bass
is drilling through my speakers on the background. A
perfect track to dream away on, although the brutality
will make sure that you’ll wake up in time.
Well, what is more to say about this album? Fans from
other French bands who turned out to have the talent to
make this kind of music (ZNO, Kill The Thrill... maybe
even Herrschaft?) will really appreciate Beat In Zen.
So, put down your fish and chips and give some of your
time to this record, it’s definitely worth it. Very,
very, veeeeeery interesting stuff to say the least!
