Artist: ZNO
Album: Happiness In Love
Year: 2005
ZNO is a rather unknown industrial metal band hailing
from France. They say to create a mix somewhere
inbetween ambient and metal. Since I am not a too big
fan of ambient, I didn’t expect much of it. But,
surprise surprise! The album turned out to be better
than I expected. Some nice sampling with a sludge
attitude is thrown over the balcony. This will be one of
the albums that you have to listen with your headphones
on to hear as much as possible the details.
‘DefyRMX’ is the first track of this album. The song
kicks off slowly, but after about three minutes finally
the drums are added. The song turns out to be a perfect
soundtrack for a dark scene in a psycho thriller movie.
Listen to this track at night for some extra atmosphere.
‘Gliff’ continues to walk on the dark atmospheric path.
This song could fit excellent in movies like ‘The
Exorcist’ and common. The fact that the sampling keeps
on repeating itself gives this song a pretty sick
attitude, but sick in a good way. ‘Suprahead’ is my
favourite track of the EP. Great noisy ambient sampling
mixed with some powerful sludge guitarwork ending in a
heavy sound. Follow the heartbeat of this song and dare
to dream away. ‘Hypnosis’ is the most harsh song of this
release. It sucks you into a machinery based world for
six minutes, without any way to escape (if you cannot
find the stop button on your stereo that is). ‘Something
Else’, the final track, provides a great mix between the
forces of both electro (:Wumpscut:, Suicide Commando,
Tamtrum) and doom metal (My Dying Bride, Ataraxie). A
bit the different song of the record, but definitely
well performed. For people who have noticed that I
haven’t mentioned anything about the vocals, you are
right. The reason for this is pretty simple though. The
whole album is instrumental, and I think this band will
not need a vocalist because it would bring the beauty of
the music a bit to the background. Fans of Kill The
Thrill, Elend, Low Distortion Unit and various ambient
artists will really appreciate ZNO, and so do I.
