Artist: HEADPHONE KILLAZZ
Album: Revakcination
Year: 2010
Since their debut album 'We Are Grown, Not Born' I have kept an extra close eye on Headphone Killazz. This Russian four-piece managed to make my eardrums explode with their extremely powerful mix of cyber metal with drum'n'bass, breakbeat and breakcore. Right here we have their second full-lenght release: Revakcination comes with 12 brand new songs, providing over half an hour of music.
After the ambient alike intro "Log In", the album kicks off with "Virt". It's a decent midtempo track, coming with excellent riffing, atmospheric intermezzo's and straight forward programming and vocal lines. 'Half-Life Period' comes with diverse drums, brutal vocal lines and even more brutal riffing. The welladded samples give the song a cyberish attitude, and the mixture of breakcore and death metal drumming gives the song a huge power boost. 'Multimedia Me' is maybe even more powerful. It comes with recogniseable vocal lines, hyperactive and sometimes bashing breakcore programming and killer riffs. The little intermezzo's, mostly existing of samples, show tiny wave influences. 'Anabiosis' is the longest and probably as well the most atmospheric song on the release. It offers you a mixture of cyber metal and wave, with blended in electronic samples. Despite the midtempo attitude of the track the song comes with a certain amount of power. 'Mono Log' is an instrumental intermezzo, bringing drum'n'bass programming together with electro and ambient, to get followed by 'Fruit'. It's a bashing cyber metal track, built on a spine of spastic programming and tight riffing. The samples are wellplaced, and the vocal lines are recogniseable. 'Symbiont' is built on a somewhat catchy spine of midtempo programming and simple but straight forward riffing, blending together very well with the brutal vocal lines and subtile added samples. The death metal influences all over the song but specially in the chorus give the song a certain amount of brutality. 'Pain Treshold' opens with hardcore/breakcore beats accompanied by a strong riff. This attitude is spread all over the song with exception of the chorus, that comes in a modern cyber metal jacket. 'Placenta' is an atmospheric downtempo song, with diverse vocal lines and an overdose of (harsh) electronic samples. It's an easy listening track overall. 'Vectors of Hatred' is a decent midtempo track, coming with straight forward industrial metal riffing, powerful vocal lines, diverse drumming and essential sampling. The release ends with 'Log Out' - an ambient instrumental outro.
Compared to their debut album, Headphone Killazz hasn't only improved it's production. As well when it comes to variation in songwriting, riffing and programming this band took some steps forward. If you enjoyed the debut album you can buy this one blindly, and if you haven't heard of this band before but wouldn't mind listening to a mixture of breakcore and breakbeat with brutal cyber metal, same advice. This album is an open sollicitation for becoming album of the year in 2010, and we're not even halfway 2010 anyway!
