Artist: BROKEN CULTURE
Album: Ideophobia
Year: 2007

Broken Culture is a solo project of a dude named Dave Mosicant from the U.S.A. I got to know this stuff when the “The Horrible Sounds In My Head” EP was released. As the review of that EP witnesses, I was quite surprised and positive about that particular release, although it didn’t manage to reach the yearlist. For 2007, Dave will try again to enter the yearlists with the release of his new album “Ideophobia”. This one contains nine tracks and is about 22 and a half minutes long.

After the ‘Experiment’-al intro (have a look at the tracklist for the word joke), the song ‘Skee?’ kicks off. This is a very electro based track, with pitched vocals and catchy sampling. ‘Mr. Liar and his Cult’, the next track, is a song about God, or ‘God’ if you wish. This song contains sampling that reminds me to the works of Diabolos Rising (now Raism), which is definitely a compliment. This mixed with the known vocal works of this project turned this song into my favourite one of the release. ‘Control’ contains a so-called ‘heart’-beat and dark, electronic sampling. Although this song is quite easy listening, it might be able to scare some four year old children who are alone in a bassment at night. The next two tracks are instrumental ones, and ‘Disease M-E’ is the one that follows. This song has some sampling that sounds quite familiar (once, a trance group called Darude used this kind of sampling a lot). Overall, this song sounds a little flat and even gets a bit boring in the end, which is quite a pity. ‘Variety’ is an instrumental intermezzo again, which brings us to the last track called ‘Euthanasia’. This is again a cool and easy listening EBM likely track, with a very dreamy synth line.

The characteristic style that Broken Culture appeals is one that I have heard several times before lately. The mix of huge electronic influences and EBM likely pitched vocals can be found in the music of bands like Digitalis Purpurea and Herrschaft too. And in my opinion, these bnds are doing a better job than our pal Dave. Broken Culture seems to have a lack of power in most of the tracks, and it seems like the most powerful blastbeats are only hidden in intermezzos without any vocals. In my opinion, this is a pity, because I clearly hear the good potential here, but it’s still not unleashed. Also, when I compare it to the preverious EP, I do hear some improvements, but I am quite sure that this project can do many times better. Am I just a bit ideophobic now? Not really, because getting back to the basics, this release ain’t that bad at all anyway.
