Artist: BIOCONFLICT
Album: Infighting
Year: 2004

Bioconflict is an industrial metal threesome hailing from France. Born in 2002, this band says to be influenced by Front Line Assembly, KMFDM, Ministry, Godflesh and Fear Factory. According to their biography, we can expect a rough mix of death metal, EBM and industrial metal/rock. When I gave their ‘Infighting’ EP a quick listen, it turned out that this band could be thrown in the cyberpunk genre with ease as well...

‘Green Powder Cloud’ kicks off with a bouncing beat and a hyperactive guitar riff, which turns out to be a good introduction for the track. It consists of very experimental musical works (specially the programming), strong distorted guitarparts and wicked FX sampling. It sails from cold and silent intermezzo’s to hyperactive and danceable parts, via a metal road and little punk influenced vocals. ‘Median’ is more midtempo and atmospheric. It consists of a futurepop/EBM likely beat, powerful guitarwork and raw screaming vocal parts. ‘Blacksunrise’ (yes, it really is one word) opens with noisy musical works, to be followed by a gentle bassline. After, the track turns out to be a rather easy listening one. The punk influences, hidden in the guitar and vocal works, are swapped with gentle electronic sampling and cold synthlines and easy going, danceable programming works. The closer the song reached its end, the more these elements are brought together which results in a powerful though atmospheric ending. The title track of the release, ‘Infighting’, kicks off with heavy industrial sounds. What follows is a very cool old school track (influenced by KMFDM and Ministry if you ask me – but with a more modern approach). The intermezzos take away the power of the guitars, but take care of a little more atmosphere in stead, which turns out to be an effective combination. ‘Bacteria’ sounds a little different than the tracks before, with highly present keylines and very experimental programming works. The guitar work is decent but very simple.

Bands who mix punk with industrial metal are usually the craziest around. Musically, Bioconflict really shows the potential to be mentioned in the same line as Punish Yourself and in common, but this EP sounds a little too introvert. Maybe they should unleash their crazy ideas more and more in the future. Although, not a bad release at all. People who are into MXD, Haeckeflosse and Undercover Slut should really put down their Big Macs for a while to make some time to check out Bioconflict.
