Artist: VIGILANTE
Album: Juicio Final
Year: 2006

Vigilante is one of the very few bands from Latin America that I follow with very special interest since I heard their debut promo CD. Their debut album ‘The Heroes Code’ was a damn killer one and is still featured a lot in my CD player. An European tour, built around their show at Wave Gothik Treffen followed, and they started to work on their follow-up record too. In the meantime, Vigilante released a mini-CD named ‘Juicio Final’ which features three Spanish versions of songs of ‘The Heroes Code’, one new song and five remixes.

The Spanish versions of ‘The Other Side’, ‘One Good Reason’ and ‘Survive’ are musically almost exactly the same as the English versions, only the lyrics are different. This sounds a little weird in the beginning, but you’ll get used to it in the end. In my opinion, it is a pity that Vigilante didn’t decide to do some more new sampling on the songs, because like the way it is now these songs don’t really bring anything new. A song that does bring something new is ‘Justice’, which can be called a teaser for the forthcoming full-lenght. This is a very powerful EBM track combined with industrial guitarwork. The song is very well danceable and, like every Vigilante song, the lyrics try to spread a certain message around the topic ‘Justice’, not by coincidence the name of this track indeed.
For the remixes, Vigilante managed to get some real pro’s. The remix done by Funker Vogt is one of the major ones I’ve heard this year. The remix sounds total different than the actual song, with complete different electronics and a different beat. It’s very danceable and catchy, and will guarantee dancing people in goth clubs. The remix by ‘Z Prochek’ is more harsh, mixing the styles of Suicide Commando and Combichrist with some pure EBM. This song has catchy beats too. The Chiasm remix of ‘Survive’ is the first one that seemed influenced by the actual song. The guitar parts are surprisingly well mixed through eachother, and the electronic sampling turned out to be a good spine for this remix. The Amateur God of ‘Before’ is my less favourite of the album. While the original song featured beautiful keyboard parts, this song is drowning in chaotic and unrhytmic beats which kind of murders the original, killer track. The Obszon Geschopf remix of ‘The Other Side’ started already very hopeful, with the original intro slightly mixed with (I guess) some home made stuff. The beat that comes afterwards is very powerful, and although this remix is over six minutes long, it never gets bored. Very well done!

In the end, this mini-CD turned out to be a nice item for the people who already liked the debut album of Vigilante. It could be a nice item for people who want to discover this band too, although I would advice them to try the debut album first. If you want to know why, just read this review all over again.
