Artist: MARAZENE
Album: MachiNation
Year: 2006

Marazene is a rather new band hailing from Chicago, U.S.A. Former Bile and Subsonic members are involved in this project, so the insiders already know what they can expect. Their biography tells me that we can expect something totally new though, and the proof of it has been added in the package too: their debut album ‘MachiNation’. Some of you might recognise three tracks of it, because they are to be heard on the Matrix:Revolutions DVD. If you do... well, then you still have twelve new tracks to discover, because this album contains fifteen tracks!

The concept for their songs sounds rather easy. Take some electro sampling and an electric drummer, mix it with some powerful guitars and some crazy vocals and the music is there. But, it’s the art behind the music that does the job. It is clearly a fact that Mazarene created each song with the same concept, but with a different idea. This makes all the songs sound different from eachother, but you still can hear their own specific style. For example, songs like ‘InFidel SoCieTy’ and ‘Self-WorTh’ are crazy and extreme as Hell, while a song like ‘AnTiThesis’ is more of the softer kind. ‘AlterNative’ is also a song that can be considered more of the softer kind, but on the other hand it contains the heaviest guitarwork of the album! The sampling on the other hand is very diverse and mechanized. Some other songs remind me of other bands in a way. ‘XecuTe’ sounds like a mix between Spineshank and a little Dagoba. This song includes a really cool industrial metal intermezzo with some crazy scratching. The title track, ‘MachiNation’, can be described as a mix between Ministry and a little Fear Factory, and some damn cool electro. UnCerTain is a harsh EBM sounding track (think of the thing Raism is doing) with a crazy chorus which even reminded me to Marilyn Manson! For the ones who are noticing that all these bands sound very different from eachother, that’s exactly what I meant! Different ideas and influences in songs is what brings variation in the album. There is one more song I would like to have a few words on, which happened to be my favourite track of the album. ‘(I) SeeThe/sTay aWay’ (track 12, not track 13... track 13 is a follow-up of track 12) contains blasting drum beats, heavy guitarwork and some refreshing variaty in the vocals. Easy listening and extreme at the same time, and most of all this song is one of the most unique ones I have heard lately in this genre! This is something that can be said about the whole album anyway if you ask me. If you want some more opinions about this album check your native zines, because this album has worldwide promotion and distribution. If you don’t have time for this and trust in my opinion (which you really should) then take my words: this is damn good shit!
