Artist: ASYLUM
Album: Madman Industry
Year: 2008
There are a few bandnames you can nearly find in each
country. Phantasmagoria, for example. As well Blood. I'm
sure you know what I mean. Asylum is one of those names
that seem to return in each country as well. Apperantly,
Croatia didn't have one before, but this young band
changed this. This band exists out of six people, and
says to play industrial metal. Madman Industry is their
first, self-produced release, and consists out of eight
tracks.
The release opens with an industrial though very
disturbing intro, to be followed by 'Wicked Passion'.
It's an easy listening track with cold keylines, dark
guitarwork and gentle though powerful drumming. The
interaction between the male and female vocals is
essential in this song. About halfway, the track gets
more uptempo. 'Infinity' is a little more accessable and
atmospheric. It has strong riffing, recogniseable vocal
lines and electronic sampling throughout the chorus. 'Little
Fingers Convict' opens with synth pop likely synthlines
that are mixed with disturbing electronic samples. After
about 1 minute and 15 seconds the 'real' kickoff comes,
with old school black metal musical works that are mixed
with gothic metal vocal lines and approaches. 'Inside'
kicks off with old school gothic tunes (sometimes with
even a little touch of folklore), to be followed by an
outscreaming though yet dark chorus. This song structure
is repeated all over the track. The song ends with cool
musical works (specially the guitars and the sampling).
'My Shame' is maybe the most industrial influenced track
on the record. It consists of electronic sampling, dark
vocal works and an uptempo and powerful chorus. It turns
out to be a modern gothic industrial metal track, with
various touches of (melodic) black metal. 'Filth In
Existence' opens uptempo, but slowly evolves into an
easy listening song with a very weird and unfitting
industrial intermezzo. The uptempo part sort of returns
after, but overall the song can't be named an uptempo
track. The final track has the weirdest title of them
all: 'Closed In The Circle Of Never'. Not only does the
track title sound a little strange, the song does as
well. It brings us very experimental guitarwork, uptempo
and powerful drumming and strange samples and black
metal likely passages. A chaotic end of this release.
In the end, I must admit that I don't really know what
to think of this release. When it comes to ideas and
song structure, this band clearly shows their potential
to me. But there lays a difference inbetween ideas and
practisies. In quite some cases, the industrial
samplings sound strange within the songs, as well
because of the production. The production is acceptable
for just a demo, but the strange samples are mixed way
too loud on many occasions. Because I had a nice feeling
overall, the rating will be nice as well, but I hope
that this band will try different software for the
industrial passages next time, and that the sampling
will be better mixed, because then the final rating
would be at least 15 points higher.
