Artist: MARLEE
Album: Drainage
Year: 2005
Marlee is a young and fresh two-piece hailing all the way from Japan. Born in 2001 by the birthgivers Sachi and MJ, the aim was to mix electrogoth with rock and (gothic) metal. It took them four years to release their first EP - called 'Drainage'. It contains six songs, all with Japanese lyrics and most of them with Japanese songtitles as well.
The 'Drainage' EP opens with a track called 'Trellis'. The track opens with some weird rap and hiphop tunes, to be followed by an introvert electro metal track with harsh sampling and experimental vocal lines. 'Elegy' follows. It's a gentle, mostly electronic based track, with old school sampling and powerful programming. The metal part is mostly hidden in the chorus, which is a modern and experimental outburst. 'Incomplete' continues walking on the old school electro path. It contains wicked sampling, gentle guitar riffing and wellfitting vocal lines. Next up comes the title track of this EP, named 'Drainage'. It's a very danceable track, with a mixture of wicked programming and heavy beats, which includes slightly added wellfitting guitarwork and recogniseable vocal lines. In my opinion, the best song on the release. 'Sarasvati' is a very hyperactive track, with ditto programming and sampling. The song includes as well some nicely added guitar work and accessable vocal lines. One of the more metal songs on the release. The release ends with 'Zero'. It's a gentle and modern mix of cyber metal and electro rock, which turns out to be a wellfitting end of this release.
Marlee delivers a pretty interesting debut with this 'Drainage' EP. These Japanese people show that they aren't afraid of becoming experimental within the tracks, and although it sounds a bit strange here and then, it never gets bad or boring. On the other hand - I do feel this band has more potential than it's currently showing. Therefore, a nice score for this release, and a hopeful view into the future.
