Artist: ANTI
Album: Materia
Year: 2005
Lately I have been lucky enough to discover some new
promising acts from eastern Europe. Russian band
Vergeltung was the most recent one, but now I have to
update this with a band from Latvia, simply called Anti.
They say to be influenced by bands like The Kovenant,
Samael and KMFDM and have true beliefs in the cyber
metal corner. Their debut album ‘Materia’ was released
in October 2005.
Of course it is normal for a band to have influences,
specially for a young band. But when the influences
become a bit over the top, it will turn against you. In
my opinion, this is the main problem of this band.
Pieces of the ‘In Times Before The Light (Re-Release)’
of The Kovenant are clearly hearable in every song, with
a little touch of Fear Factory and KMFDM here and there,
but it goes a bit too far to call them a rip off or a
clone. The songs are build decently and they all sound
different from eachother. Good point about this band is
that they don’t seem to be afraid to experiment with
some complex stuff, like breakbeats and some weird
guitar parts. But in the end, this is not able to mask
the things I first mentioned in the masquerade this
music buisness is. This album is a nice first try, but I
think that if this band is willing to spend some more
time in their rehearsal room to develop a more specific
style that we haven’t heard the last of this band yet!
