Artist: KRELL
Album: Media Is A God To Rec-Over
Year: 2008

People who check out this site regulary might know about my secret fetish for the Spanish formation Krell. Their gift of creating gentle electro rock with a spacy attitude has reached me already in the early months of this project, and since then it has never let go of me. Therefore, I'm a very happy man to be able to review a brand new and totally FREE release of this formation. Some basic info about Krell - they are a three-piece from San Sebastian (Spain), existing since 2005. Their music is complex though accessable, and most of all very unique. This band says to be influenced by acts such as Depeche Mode, Fear Factory and Ministry. This EP, called 'Media Is A God To Rec-Over' is this band's third release, after the self-titled demo and the debut album '...A Universe To Synchronize'. The EP contains three brand new tracks, and two tracks that were originally found on the debut album.

The EP kicks off with the experimental electro based track 'Fractales'. It's more or less an intro, with harmonized vocal lines and EBM/future pop sampling. Next up is 'Out of your Play'. This track already was one of my faves from the debut release, and it hasn't changed since then. It consists of excellent and diverse guitar work, modern spacy sampling and strong programming - all mixed with a dark attitude. The sensitive vocal lines and lyrical subject are in perfect harmony with the music. 'Idol Of A Century' is a very synth pop based track, in vein of bands such as Depeche Mode and Gary Numan - but with a more modern touch. The midtempo programming makes it a danceable track, with wellfitting guitar work and recogniseable vocal lines. Definitely a song to move your feet on, with a chorus that invites you to sing along. 'Justify' comes up next. It is again a more spacy track, a very dark and atmospheric one, including experimental guitar riffing and recogniseable sensitive vocal lines. Out of the new tracks, this one is my personal favourite. 'Say Hello Say Goodbye', as well originally featured on '...A Universe To Synchronize', is already the final track of the release. It's a very accessable, midtempo track with influences from synthpop to electro rock - mixed with a danceable and modern attitude. It turns out to be an excellent final track for another excellent Krell release.

Just as the preverious releases, 'Media Is A God To Rec-Over' doesn't include a weak spot. The newer tracks are very decently constructed, and show the diversity in both songwriting as in lyrical approach. As well musically the new tracks show some small improvements when it comes to sampling, and Et Heit keeps on managing to sing really sensitive and powerful. 'Media Is A God To Rec-Over' is another release you cannot miss for any reason. And last but not least: this album is available for free in high quality MP3 on anti-record label Death To Music Productions - so sign up to their mailinglist at DeathToMusic.com and recieve the necissary login codes for this release - as well for about 10 other free quality releases!
