Artist: FREAK XXI
Album: Musica Ordenada
Year: 2002
Freak XXI is often labeled as (one of the) biggest
industrial metal bands of Spain, but for some (to me)
unknown reasons they never managed to get known outside
of Spain. Since the band split up a while ago already,
and their official site isn't working anymore, it wasn't
easy to find information about them. According to the CD
booklet they exist out of five people, and this EP has
been released in 2002 by Zero Records.
'Black Hat Man' is the first track of this release. It
opens with heavy industrial sounds, followed by some
electro parts. When the guitars and the vocal parts were
added, the song "really" kicks off. The song has easy
going vocal lines, a modern and catchy chorus and some
excellent industrial loops. The distorted guitars are
used to add a little more power to certain songparts,
which is an exceptional point on this track. The
industrial intermezzo sounds surprisingly fresh. 'Psycho-Crime'
comes up next. It opens with some wicked industrial
sounds, and what follows is a very accessable and easy
going track. It consists of recogniseable vocal lines, a
clean chorus and some very wicked FX sampling works. The
guitars are less present in this track, which make the
vocals appear more on the front. 'Love Missile F1-11' is
probably some kind of remix track. The track seems
pretty Nine Inch Nails influenced, with exception of the
chorus. It's a danceable track that lays on the old
school edge, with a bit of a melancholic chorus. 'Serenade'
has touches from deathrock and gothic hidden in the
music. It's different from the other songs, but a little
diversity isn't a bad thing. A track which will be
appreciated by the die hard old school fans of the genre
for sure. The final song, a retro mix for 'Black Hat Man',
is a darker and instrumental version of the first track.
Tracks like these could do quite well on the dancefloor
during club nights.
I think 'Musica Ordenada' is a good introduction to
Freak XXI if you haven't heard this band yet. It shows
different faces of the band, and if you don't like
either one of them you're lucky that it only contains
five tracks. For the people who do like it, like me,
it's the other way around. My final thoughts on this one:
"What a shame that it only consists out of five tracks..."
