Artist: NARTHEX
Album: Narthex Demo
Year: 2009

What do we have here - another band from Germany... Fortunately not another Rammstein or Oomph! influenced clone though. Narthex is a duo playing a style that can be seen as a mix of industrial death metal and cyber metal. Their first proof of existence is this self-released untitled five track demo.

The release opens with 'Impending Doom'. This track is pretty diverse and experimental, moving from cyber metal to industrial death metal to surprise you with a more industrial black metal approach on the chorus. Overall the track has wellplaced vocal lines, diverse and strong riffing and very wicked drums that sails from midtempo parts to incredibly fast fragments. 'Divergence' comes with a dark electro intro, to be followed by a brutally bashing track. It moves from technical cyber metal to atmospheric black metal, all blessed with an industrial undertone. The brutal though diverse vocal lines are wellplaced and give the song a certain harsh attitude - specially the raw clean parts. 'Inter' is an instrumental intermezzo, hiding influences from out of the ambient and the wave corners, to be followed by 'The Abacist'. Its an over seven minutes song that opens with disturbing ambient sounds, to be followed by brutally bashing riffing and drumming. After this, we get soft wave parts with wellfitting vocals, to be followed by brutal cyber metal / industrial death metal tunes. It's a vicious circle that describes the whole track pretty well. 'Phantasm' is another wave influenced track, mostly synth based, with tiny picks of guitars, and raw clean vocal lines.

This self-titled demo proves to be a very nice introduction with this band, and I'm eager to see what will come in the future. Narthex proves to be a fresh and new act within the industrial metal world, that fans of the more brutal side of this genre definitely will dig.
