Artist: PROMONIUM JESTERS / ADAPTIVE REACTION
Album: Split 7"
Year: 2009
It doesn't happen too often anymore in the industrial metal world that bands decide to release a split release together, and neither does it happen too often anymore that we find vinyl releases in this genre. Therefore, this split 7" is special already without even knowing the music up front. Promonium Jesters and Adaptive Reaction are two cyberpunk bands from Canada who decided, after sharing the stage more than once, to combine their forces on this split release.
Promonium Jesters takes care of the A-side of this split release with their track named 'Skull Duty'. It's a diverse track, containing Nine Inch Nails alike basslines accompanied by tight distorted riffing and experimental solo parts. The raw vocals and the welladded samples, as well the powerful and diverse drumming, give the song a bashing attitude. The end of the song brings us a little bit of wave.
Adaptive Reaction delivers us two tracks to fill up the B-side of this 7". 'Nightmare' is an uptempo cyberpunk track, coming with straight to the point riffing and recogniseable vocal lines. Overall the song has a danceable attitude. 'Gangrene' is more midtempo based, coming with bashing breakbeat influenced programming that gets more powerful on the chorus. The riffing and the vocal lines blend in excellently, giving the song a certain energy that's essential in cyberpunk.
In the end, this split release brought me anything but a dissapointment. The more old school sounds of Promonium Jesters brought a smile on my face, while the more raw punkish sounding Adaptive Reaction side sometimes even sounded like Atari Teenage Riot, but a little less extreme. If you consider yourself a cyberpunk fan - think of bands such as Punish Yourself and Haeckeflosse - go get your hands on this 7".
