Artist: NEXT WASTE DIMENSION
Album: Rewire Reality
Year: 2007

Next Waste Dimension is a trio hailing from the north-east of The Netherlands. Since I saw them quite some years ago on the Metalbash festival (they only had one demo out back then) I was (and still am) quite impressed of their music and live show. With ease, they manage to mix (melodic) death metal with dance and electronics, and despite their talents they stayed one of The Netherlands’ best kept secret for quite some years. Finally, in 2007 a label opened their eyes (or should I say ears?) and after three demos they got signed and the release of the first full-lenght album became reality. ‘Rewire Reality’ consists of ten tracks (most of them are revamped tracks from their past demos) and got released by Under Her Black Wings in summer 2007.

‘Opaque’ has the honour to open this album. The first 35 seconds you think you’re listening to some future pop song, but when the guitars and vocals are added there’s no way back. Thrashy guitarriffs, powerful drumming and the agressive yet understandable growling vocals of Rikkert add a certain brutality to the track. The way the keys/sampling give backing support on the pre-chorus and the chorus is pretty impressive, and the metalish outro is a nice and original ending for the track. ‘Zephyr’ contains more uptempo stuff, with brutal metal parts swapped with gentle, key orientated parts. The electronics sound more fresh than on the preverious tracks, and the slower chorus fits the track surprisingly well. ‘The Forgotten’ is the third track on the album. Its a less industrial influenced track, which is built on a solid melodic death metal spine. Its a more atmospheric and easy listening song, which is pretty nice for a change. ‘1st Encounter’ sounds like synthpop for the first 1 minute and 20 seconds, but afterwards it has been build up slowly to end in a decent melodic (death) metal track. The fresh dance intermezzo on this track shows that there is clearly no lack of creativity in Next Waste Dimension. ‘Stamina’ is the name given to the next track. It sounds surprisingly happy and even a little danceable, without too much use of electronics. The fast and brutal metal parts fit in the song quite well, and doesn’t murder the track. Next up comes ‘Distorted’. Again opening with some dance and synth pop tunes, but transforming into a thrasher when the metal suddenly enters the room. An atmospheric chorus with some little bass solos might not be the thing that surprises me the most, but the intermezzo where they manage to mix gentle and dark electronic stuff with heavy and brutal guitars. ‘Nervewrecker’ can be placed in the same category as ‘Stamina’, with some danceable drumworks swapped with metal parts, although the metal parts are more present in this song. After 1 minute and 25 seconds the more happy dancetunes transform into some atmopheric industrial metal track, to transform back in a more happy state in the end, with a thrashy outro. ‘Dead Soil’ is a melodic death metal track, with slightly added electronics. When about 1/3 of the song passed away, the song gets more brutal (death metal) to get gentle right after (electronic intermezzo) and then to continue the brutal path, to end in the more gentle vein of the track again. ‘I Am Energy’ follows. This is a very original and modern industrial metal track. A great mix between dance, metal and electro is the best description of it. With ease, the band floods from one genre to another, which results in quite an... energetic track (yes indeed!). ‘Force Fed Greed’ is the final track of the album, and the (melodic) death metal with the industrial flavour still remains as tasty as in the beginning. This track is a gentle one, with the necissary dance tunes hidden everywhere and nowhere. The outro is very beautiful (wicked guitar riff), and that probably declares why they picked this song as final song of the album.

When I give a closer ear to the production, I can only be positive. While on the preverious demos (unfortunately I am still missing the first one, but I’ve heard the mp3s on the website) the keys are a little too loud now and then, the metal parts really come forward on this full lenght. Furthermore, most of the sampling and the key lines are revamped and sound way more darker than on the demos, which fits the music better. As a lovely bonus, there’s also a nice video for the song ‘Opaque’, where we can find some cool art done by Jeroen (VJ) (who the people who have seen NWD live will recognise because of the beamer stuff). This stuff is pure quality that never gets boring, and the fact that this CD comes in the weirders juwel case ever won’t spoil the fun at all.
