Artist: RON [K]
Album: Apathy
Year: 2009
I can hear some people think already - "Wasn't there a Ron [k] release this year already? You reviewed it on here, right?". The answer to that is yes. I can hear other people think - "What the Hell is Ron [k] ?". The answer to that is fairly simple too. Ron [k] is a 19 year old multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles, taking influences from almost every corner of the alternative music scene. For this project, named after him, he teamed up with two more musicians. The first proof of existence was the two track promo 'Grace', which indeed got reviewed on here by me, and turned out to be a positive surprise to me. Now 'Apathy' is waiting here, a four track EP including three new songs and a remix for the title track of the two song promo.
The release opens straight forward with the title track. It's a gentle and accessable mix of wave, electro metal and future pop coming with steady riffing, powerful drumming and sensitive vocal lines. The song is built on a spine of excellent keylines, giving the song more accessibility and originality. 'No One, Nothing, Nil' is a danceable electro metal track coming with diverse riffing, different types of vocal lines and a mesmerising beat making it impossible to not tap your foot on. The guitar solo is wellplaced and a positive surprise as well. The so-called Ab-Used Mix for 'Grace' comes with an overdose of darkwave blending in EBM and gothic rock influences. The almost entire female vocals give the track strong flashbacks to bands like Diva Destruction. The release ends with 'Don't Care'. It's a sensitive track built on a spine of soft keylines, acoustic guitars and gentle drumming, adding diverse (mostly whispering) vocal lines. A nice ending of this release, that is blessed with an excellent production.
I remember I ended my review for the 'Grace' promo with the words "I'm hoping to hear more of this band, just to make sure they're not a one hit wonder". Since the band now has proven to not be one, I'll end this review with the words "Hurry up with a full-lenght album!"
