Artist: VIOLENT DIVA
Album: Six Violent Mornings
Year: 2007

Another band from Italy for a change (logging out of sarcasm mode) – Violent Diva is a duo from Bologna, who says to be an active band for two years before the release of this very promo. The promo comes with a press sheet written in bad English (Italenglish?), but fortunately it’s quite informative. ‘Six Violent Mornings’ is described as ‘sonic experimentations with throbbing beats of clear techno/EBM origin, joined with melodic and harmonic searches of various extraction, flowing back to the same conclusion; a defined and original musical structure.’ Quite some big (read: vague) words for a seven track (and its called ‘Six Violent Mornings’ indeed… a miscount?) debut promo, and I’m normally not that fond on descriptions like these. But hey, you can’t judge a book on what the author says about it too, so lets have a listen to the promo now and judge afterwards.

‘White Dress’ is the first track of the album. Musically it has some touches of fellow Italian bands Syrian and XP8, but the Sisters of Mercy likely vocals suddenly give the track a different direction. It’s an easy listening EBM track, danceable with a dark attitude. ‘Electro Suicide’ is a bit more electro orientated, with bashing programming works that creates the perfect rhytm for a dance massacre. This track was also featured on the IBM Vol 2 compilation a while ago, and the people who thought that track rocked should really listen to this improved version too. Plus, a catchy chorus to sing a long with while you’re dancing! Next up comes a Duran Duran cover. ‘Wild Boys’ is a pretty weird choice if you ask me, but it turned out to be a perfect cover. The vocal style is the opposite of the original track, and also the music style comes quite close to that, but Violent Diva managed to keep enough elements of the original track in their cover version to keep it recogniseable, without losing their own style because it truely sounds like one of their own tracks. Impressive! ‘Headfucker (The Noise Inside The Head)’ comes up next. It contains a marching beat, more softer vocals and cool electronic parts. People who know (and like) ‘What The Fuck Is Wrong With You’ by Combichrist might also appreciate this track, because globally it comes quite close to that one. ‘TV Shows’ opens with some Nintendo likely sounds (?), followed by sampled vocals like Cher (?). Does the track gets normal too? Yes, it does, fortunately. It’s an easy listening EBM/future pop likely track, with some weird experimental parts hidden here and there. ‘Flammable’ is again more danceable and powerful. It’s a cool and dark mix of electro with techno, and the wellknown gothic influences. Songs like these can make a dancefloor explode within no time. ‘Neverending Nightmare’ is the final track, and one that definitely surprises me to say the least. Orchestral parts are mixed with some old school EBM touches and some modern gothic (metal) influences. A song that’s total different from the other tracks on the album, but definitely not in a bad way, because the band shows their talents to write these kind of stuff very clearly.

The pure metal fans reading this review might be wondering why I haven’t mentioned the metal guitar parts in the songs. Well, the answer is very clearly: because there aren’t any. Then why review it? Because we review everything that has been sent to us, and besides that you can clearly hear some metal influences in the song structures (not too complex – straight to the point – no compromises). Furthermore, I didn’t want to let this one go away unnoticed, because that would be rather unworthy for something with this quality. Good thing I didn’t judge on the promo after the press sheet already, because then I would have missed this all. If you are ready for the next battle then fasten your seatbelts quickly, because this is good stuff!
