Artist: SYMPTOMS
Album: Outspoken Goodbye
Year: 2008
Here we have another band that, after the release of F**k Em All - Volume 1, decided to release a total free release on Death To Music is Italian duo Symptoms. Already released one album and one EP by themselves (which both had good reviews on our page), they started writing new songs immidiately for what turned out to be their second full-lenght release called 'Outspoken Goodbye'. People familiar with their older stuff will know what to expect - an insane mix of industrial black metal, ambient, electro metal and industrial death metal, combined with experimental passages - sometimes blessed with a healthy dose of a good sense of humor!
The release opens with a song called 'Chestnuts'. It's a very quiet track, with classical piano works accompanied by gentle programming, and even some jazzy trumpets. The slightly added guitarwork fits the song surprisingly well. 'Railway Hall' is a dark ambient song, with slow bashing programming works and heavy dark sampling. This song also contains subtile guitar riffing, which contributes to the darkness of the track. 'Fucktastic Blasturbation' is a fast industrial death metal song, with fast powerful drumming and sick industrial sampling. The riffing is diverse and experimental at times, and fits the song very well. The end of this song is a blast of pure insanity. 'Dead Factories In The Cold' comes up next. Its a symphonic black metal sounding track, with influences of death metal and without losing the industrial touch. It has atmospheric keylines, diverse and strong drumming and excellent welfitting guitarwork, all mixed together with an avantgarde attitude. 'Laburnum Walk' is a more atmospheric and ambient influenced track again, with slow frightening passages swapping to heavy dark moments. This track reminded me to Goblin (Dario Argento movie music) for some reason. 'The Consequences Of Industrial' is the shortest track on the release, and as well one of the more heavy tracks. It contains bashing programming, brought together with dark brutal riffing to create a midtempo, old school black metal feeling. 'Seaside Metropolis' is the title of the final track of the record. Its duration of seven and a half minutes makes it the longest track on the release as well. It's an experimental track, going from industrial (death) metal to symphonic black metal, with electronic and ambient passages and intermezzo's. The innovative riffing and sampling are worth mentioning, as well as the diverse programming works and the surprisingly cool sounding trumpets.
'Outspoken Goodbye' turns out to be even more experimental than the preverious two releases (who were already pretty experimental). This results on one side in more quiet parts and experiments with horns, and on the other side in more mature programming on the brutal tracks. In both occasions, it can be called an improvement. I think the message about this band and album is mentioned perfectly clear on the Death To Music page. I quote: "Sometimes it's brutal technical Death Metal, sometimes Fear Factory style industrial, sometimes humorous and then sometimes ambient music - but more often than not, it is something you may probably like." Download it for free on DeathToMusic.com and see (or hear?) for yourself!
