Artist: LEECH WOMAN
Album: The Burning of Animals (12")
Year: 2008
After quite a decent looking discography, including two full-lenghts, one EP and a remix album, Leech Woman decided that it was time for something new. Well, not really new, rather old school; a vinyl single! 'The Burning of Animals' consists of two tracks on each side, including three remixes and one 'original' track. For the people who haven't heard of this band before - Leech Woman is a two-piece hailing from the United Kingdom. According to their biography, they can be described as 'one of the UK's most extreme bands, showing up the current fashion for so-called Metal, pseudo-Punk and Industrial bands for what it is: the soundtrack for angst-ridden teenagers to consume briefly en route to being good citizens'. Interesting huh?
'The Burning of Animals' - the main track of this single of course - turns out to be a downtempo track, including influences from dark electro, ambient and a little noise and metal. The programming is bouncing like a heartbeat, while the guitars and vocal lines are this distorted that for the typical U2 fan it would be barely recogniseable. Ambassador 21 made a quite cool remix of it. It opens with slow and heavy tunes, to get blessed with a wicked rhytm and experimental use of the original samples after. The track has a slightly danceable attitude, which is surprising knowing the original piece. On the other side of this release - the B-side - we find two more remixes. Noize Punishment's remix is a totally industrialized one, with bashing distorted bassdrums and minimal touches of dark electro, drum'n'bass and breakbeat - mixed with desperately outbursting vocals and wicked use of the distorted riffing. Peter File's remix is a little less noisy, including influences from breakcore and a little hardcore. It shows innovative use of the riffing, essential use of the original keylines and a kickass beat that would even make the Party Animals a little jealous.
I didn't really know what to expect of this vinyl release - but in the end it justified the time I spent on listening to it and writing this review. Although the original track sounds a little flat here and there, the release includes a bunch of really cool remixes that could have been spun in industrial, electro, hardcore and maybe even drum'n'bass parties. An essential new piece to my record collection.
