Artist: THEM PHILOSOPHY
Album: Thought Before Action
Year: 2008

Them Philosophy is a band hailing from Italy, formed in 2005. Before 2007, the band mostly spend their time writing songs and playing many live shows, until they started recording their debut album in May 2007. The UK Division record label picked the band up and released this debut album, 'Thought Before Action', in January 2008. In May 2008 the band toured all over Europe with Christian Death, including performing on the WGT festival. Musically this band describes themselves as 'Alternative Rock'.

After the intro, the 'Thought Before Action' album continues with 'Please'. It's an experimental track, implenting elements from nu-metal, wave, rock and even a little punk. It's blessed with a bouncing rhytm, diverse vocal lines and wellplaced riffing - giving the song a powerful attitude. 'Mother S.' continues to walk on the experimental part, with touches from d-beat, ethno/folk, modern rock and metal. The ethno/folk couplets give the song a fun attitude and makes it catchy overall, and the balance between the upbeat chorus and the little downtempo intermezzos is surprisingly good. 'Sense Of Absence' is a very accessable track, with atmopsheric clean guitar touches and powerful drumming, matching perfectly with the vocal lines. The song ends with some kind of reggae/folkish tunes, that fits the song surprisingly well. 'En-Sof 1' is a short and Italian sung clean intermezzo, which perfectly floods over into 'Vertigo'. It's a song blessed with mostly wave touches, while importing influences from out of the punk and the rock corners. It's an accessable song, mostly midtempo, with a moving end that makes you tap your foot immidiately. 'En-Sof 2' follows. It's a mostly metal driven track, with heavy riffing and bashing drumming. The diverse vocal lines, as well within the more quiet parts, are an essential part of this track. With 'Where Is The Limit' we reached another experimental track, including small touches from reggae, ska and ethno brought together with a modern rock attitude. This track might sound a little strange when you hear it the first time, but gets addictive very quickly. 'Come La Mafia' is another track with Italian lyrics. It's a track moving from old school rock couplets to outbursting chorusses and smoothy wave intermezzos. It's as well the longest track of the release. 'House Of Mirrors' is a short and straight to the point track, with heavy riffing and drumming that's mostly metal based mixed with old school rock parts, all wrapped in a package of catchyness. The diverse vocal lines show a certain experimental degree without getting out of touch. 'Previous Time' is more or less the ballad on this album, with sensitive vocal lines and musical works and an outburst at the end. The release ends with 'Magdalene' - again a diverse track with old school rock and uptempo punk/metal touches mixing with an enthausiastic attitude and experimental approaches.

As the track by track review already describes, this isn't something you hear every day. 'Thought Before Action' hides many different influences, diverse guitarwork, innovative programming and vocal lines reminding me of bands such as Exilia and the Guano Apes. Despite the many different influences and touches the album sounds are in perfect harmony. This is definitely an album that needs to be discovered by many of you - and don't give up after just one listen, because the more you listen to this album, the better it gets. Very high potential band!
