Artist: SYSTEMYK
Album: The Truth Reclaimed
Year: 2006
Asking retired people for ID when they order a beer is
pretty lame. Asking for a light at a crematory is pretty
lame too. And not to mention the Dutch politics at this
moment! Anyway, fortunately UK industrial metal is not
that lame. Bands (or projects) like Ewigkeit, Luntara
and Interlock already reached my ears some time ago, and
lately [Digi]core and Systemyk are added to that group
as well. Since the people who pay attention to
IndustrializedMetal.tk already know that I did a review
for [Digi]core last month, I don’t have to explain that
this review should be for Systemyk. Some short info
about them: they exist of five members amd for about
five years, so if they wish to do any Jackson 5 cover
this is probably their chance! This band is based in
Kingston upon Hull. According to their included
biography their style can be described as ‘industrial
metal, using a combination of electro and real drums,
melodic synth effects, intense vocals and heavy
distorted guitars cutting through.’ This combined with
the influences they mentioned (Zeromancer, NIN and
Deathstars to name a few) this band made themself sound
promising already before I have heard one single note of
them!
Their demo ‘The Truth Reclaimed’ exists of three tracks.
So, lets just kick off with the first one shall we? The
first impression of this track was a little
controversial. Why I hear you ask? Well, don’t be
impatient and just read on damnit! Since I dare to say I
am rather known with industrial metal releases, most
bands pick a smashing, catchy and blasting track as
opener for their releases. But, Systemyk is different!
The first song is build around a cold atmosphere, mostly
constructed with the synths, and some easy listening
metal with the touch of the old school. Think of Nine
Inch Nails likely music with the keys of Stormlord to
give a lunatic description. ‘Empty Without You’ is
decently build and never really get’s bored, so don’t
fear to end up empty without me. For those who did
understand the word joke, I would like to say some words
about the next track. For thosewho did not understand
the word joke, you can continue to read as well. ‘Deaf
Ears’ does not have a promising title, because why do
you call a song like that? Don’t you want people to hear
it? I don’t think so, because this is some cool stuff.
Some killer gothic influences mixed with really heavy
guitars and machinery drumwork give this song maybe a
million of different faces. I think the electro freaks,
the metal freaks, the industrial freaks and just the
crazy people who like wicked stuff (yes, I am one of
them) all will be pleased to hear a part of their lives
in this song. And... beautiful guitarwork on the
intermezzo! Best song out of the three on this demo!
‘Can’t Carry On’ gives me flashbacks to the beginning
times of Nine Inch Nails, and a shorter flashback to the
‘Cyberbeauty’ album done by Kubrick. The song is
decently build, but there is something I have against
this song. It’s the same reason why I don’t totally
worship Nine Inch Nails: the variation level in the
sampling is not very high which can turn a great idea
into a flat song. This song is a bit too good to be
called flat, but I think you will get the idea. People
who have read until here probably think that this demo
will get something like 80 / 100. But, I am not done
yet! Muhahaha! There is something I have against this
demo. Which is in one word: the vocals. The dude is able
to sing, but there is just nothing special with the
vocals. The deep vocals are not deep enough, and the
powerful parts are not powerful enough, and so on and so
on. A pity, because with maybe some improvements this
demo would really have reached that 80/100. But oh well,
this is not a bad score anyways. Fans of NIN, Kubrick
and the other bands that were mentioned somewhere in
this review, have a look to this band. Oh, and for the
people who like to know every little thing Greg
Mackintosh of Paradise Lost is doing in his life besides
rehearsals and other band duties: he produced this demo
too!
