Artist: BIOCONFLICT
Album: Unhealthy
Year: 2007
Bioconflict from France already managed to be a positive
surprise with the release of their ‘Infighting’ EP.
Their catchy and easy going cyberpunk music had a nice
affection on me, and now they strike back with a full-lenght
release. Although I’m a proud vegan and I take great
care of my health, I felt that it was my duty to listen
to the release called ‘Unhealthy’. Hopefully I’m immune
for it though...
‘Darkomen’ is the opening track of this release. It’s a
mixture of different influences, like industrial (death)
metal, ambient, punk and even a little touch of Rage
Against The Machine’s music. Overall it’s a more than
decent track, but I feel that the duration of five
minutes is just one minute too long. The title track of
the record turns out to be even longer (six minutes and
two seconds – the longest track of the release). It’s a
more accessable track, with midtempo drumming and modern
guitarwork. The punky vocal screams give the track a
certain feeling of despair, which is answered by the
sampling and keylines quite well. ‘Inside’ is a modern
track, with hardcore metal influences and some wicked FX
sampling hidden here and there. The outro is
surprisingly gentle. ‘Borderline’ is the next
composition, which is the best track in my opinion. It
has diverse and powerful drumming, recogniseable and
strong vocal lines and some experimental keylines and
FX, which turned out to sound quite well. ‘Theories’ is
a modern and powerful chanson, with wicked guitarwork,
midtempo drumming and a gentle approach. There are some
weird samples and FX sounds hidden in the middle of the
track. ‘Anger’ doesn’t sound too angry. In fact, its a
very easy listening track, with quite some sensitive
keylines and dark guitarwork. ‘Crawler’ comes up next.
It opens with crazy electronics, to be followed by a
modern and experimental industrial metal track with
cyberpunk influences. It’s a pretty catchy track, with
decent guitar and vocal lines and easy going drumming.
‘Crushsyndrom’ (yes, one word indeed) follows. It’s
again a midtempo track, with very soft and sensitive
passages. ‘Saviour’ is the final track of the release.
It’s again an easy going, decently build track with
mostly midtempo musical works and recogniseable vocal
lines. The guitarwork is really powerful, so is the
hardcore sounding chorus. The soft intermezzo is
surprisingly chosen, but doesnt outfit the track.
The fact that Bioconflict hired a real drummer was
clearly a good step forward for this band, and although
all the tracks are more than decent, and you definitely
hear the effort in all of them, they don’t completely
convince me somehow. It’s my feeling that they
concentrate too much on the technical aspects of the
track, without trying to add a little craziness within
the tracks. It’s a pity, because to me it seems like
there’s way more hidden inside this band.
